Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I teach you valuable lessons that will impact your Christian authorship.
For today's article, I will share another chapter from my latest resource, Building an Author Platform that Works! If you are new to my website and blog, and your curious to know exactly why I am teaching about this topic, let me briefly introduce my work.
I believe that all of God's writers have a special calling. We have been commissioned to use our gifts and talents to help spread the Gospel to the world. And this comes from using effective communication skills that bridge the gap between mankind and God.
What I have discovered over the last two years is that we can walk in our calling full-time when we learn best practices for creating and managing a writing ministry. Whether we choose to write and publish books exclusively or we decide to offer our writing services to Christian organizations, we have the ability to receive income that will keep us moving in this calling for a lifetime.
And one of the ways that I help Christian writers transform into full-time authors is by providing training materials that will assist them in laying the foundation for their writing ministry and business.
Within this structure is the need to create a dynamic Author Platform that readers will find addictive. And that brings me to today's post.
This article will give you a sneak preview of Chapter 4 in my book. I want to help you understand that when it comes to building anything, including an Author Platform, you need to create the mindset for this.
I've also shared more content from my book in other articles, so I invite you to take a look at them in addition to this post. (Find those articles here.)
There is so much work that goes into building a dynamic online presence, and if you don't have the mental capacity to commit to it, you will fail. And if you don't want to fail, then understand that there are certain mental exercises that you can do, starting today, that will help you get prepared to succeed.
So, enjoy this teaching, and get ready to be empowered!
Chapter 4 Introduction
In this chapter, we will explore the need to build the mindset that will help you build your Author Platform for the long-run.
As I’ve shared with you in the previous chapters, this is a task that you must commit to accomplish over time. It’s not something that you need to rush. You won’t lose out of precious money if you don’t have your Author Platform perfected in a month.
Instead, you need to treat this portion of your writing ministry with respect and care.
And this requires that you have the mindset that will make this possible.
During the video presentation, I will talk to you about the ways in which I cultivated the mindset for building my Author Platform. I will share with you the types of reading materials that helped inform my best practices. And I will give you a couple of assignments that you can complete as they relate to these readings.
For me, it’s nothing to work on my Author Platform every day. In fact, it’s a requirement for me now that I’ve committed to my ministry full-time. But getting to this place didn’t come easily. I had to condition my mind, and you must do the same.
So, let’s jump into this teaching, and learn how to build the mindset that will lead to an Author Platform that astounds your readers.
How can new Christian Authors develop the mindset to birth their Author Platform and commit to its growth?
By now, you’re probably wondering, “Felecia, when will we get to the part where you tell me how to build my Author Platform?”
And if this is your thought right now, then I want to let you in on a little secret: I am telling you right now to how to build it.
It’s more than just completing a few steps here and there. Building your Author Platform requires you to give everything you have to seeing this work thrive. And you must have the mindset to see this come to pass.
This chapter will be rather extensive, but well worth your time. Unless you implement these strategies right now, you will not create something that your readers will love.
So, get your notes ready, because there are some exercises that I will have you complete, especially as you engage in the video presentation.
What Do We Mean When We Say, “Build a Mindset for Something?”
One of my favorite business books is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. In it, he teaches his students (readers) about the power of the mind. He explains that the thoughts we think are truly powerful, and they contain the ability to make our dreams a reality.
It’s our thoughts that determine our success or failure. So, we must never ignore the mind’s power.
In the business world, you will find a number of resources that will teach you about building a business mindset, one that will help you reach your goals.
One writer, Sherese Duncan, noted that being business minded means:
And if you’ve followed me for a while, then you know that building your writing ministry is not that different from building a business. They are the same, although each one may contain different motives for operations.
There are other elements that go into building something that will last. You must possess certain traits that are not found in most people.
You must be resilient: able to recover quickly from major or minor setbacks.
You must be diligent: able to give great care to your calling and your work.
You must be dogmatic: able to hold fast to your vision without wavering one bit.
And you must possess a host of other traits so that you begin to rise above the average writer.
If you lack in some of these areas, that’s OK for now, but you need to make great efforts towards changing that. And that means developing the mindset that will help you build what you envision.
As you already know, constructing an Author Platform will take time and patience to build. So, let’s go through a few strategies that will help you get to where you want to be.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, have your vision, mission, and ultimate goal in mind at all times.
Whenever I write a new book or create a new blog post, which is a part of my Author Platform, I make sure that my goals are always in mind. I know that I can’t simply create content that will talk about anything. It has to be focused and concise, and it must provide you with solutions for building your writing ministry. After all, this is the mission of LiyahAmore Publishing.
So each time that I create anything, I keep my ultimate goal in mind. I ask myself, “How will this blog post or video help me reach my business goals? How will this content help my audience? Is this something that will eventually help me sell my online school?” If I discover that what I’m doing does not help move my business forward, then I choose not to waste time on completing it. I move on to more productive methods that will keep me focused on real results.
As a new Christian Author and in the beginning stages of constructing your Author Platform, you must keep your goals in mind. Ask yourself why do you want to add a blog to your Author Platform. Ask yourself if creating a YouTube channel is the right method for you. Think about your writing ministry’s mission and vision, and make an assertive decision that you will only do what will help you reach your goals while serving your readers.
Just from this exercise, you can see how a shift in your thinking will help you create an Author Platform that works.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, remember that nothing will happen perfectly all the time.
There have been many times when I’ve tried to do something within LiyahAmore Publishing that simply would not work. For example, when I started working on my Author Platform, I tried to do things the same way that I watched others do them. I tried to engage on social media the same way. I tried to write in the same tone as someone else.
I tried to be the perfect, new entrepreneur student, as if I was to be graded on my progress by some invisible, seasoned entrepreneur.
I failed at a lot things within this ministry; but it wasn’t until I started learning from those mistakes then that’s when I experienced increase.
As your building your Author Platform, understand that everything will not run smoothly. You will encounter setbacks. You will experience a few failures. But that’s the not the end-all. Instead, you must see each mistake as a potential lesson. They are there to strengthen your resolve…not to destroy you.
As I shared in the beginning of this Chapter, you must be resilient in this work. You must be resilient in building your online space, because this is the only way that you will last. All of the successful writerpreneurs that we see today have one thing in common: They learned how to perfect their areas of weaknesses, and they chose to keep moving when everyone else decided to quit.
So, as you work on your platform each day or each week, understand that it won’t always be perfect. You will make some changes along the way, and that’s OK as long as the changes are the result of growth and not indecisiveness. Be persistent and diligent with your work, and you will reap the rewards in the long-run.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, create a plan of action that will ensure you yield results.
Here’s what I mean: When it comes to working on my Author Platform, I know that I have to provide new, engaging content on a weekly basis. That means that I’ve created a workable schedule that allows me to do what I need to do. My writing ministry no longer simply consists of writing a blog post. Now, I also have EWP-TV, a weekly show that airs LIVE on Facebook. I also have a podcast. And I’ve added three more websites to the ministry, because my influence regarding politics and pro-life endeavors has increased.
So, in order for me to build my Author Platform that will last, I must divide my time in proportion to what needs to be done each week. I have a plan of action, and I only make adjustments to it when I see that something isn’t working well for me.
And that’s what you must do as well. This all works to help you cultivate the mindset for building an Author Platform that works.
You need to create an action plan, and you need to start today. Begin by looking at your monthly goals for your writing ministry, and then determine what needs to be added to your Author Platform to help you reach that goal. Do you need to create a new blog? Do you need to add a webinar to your website? Do you need to construct a new book for your audience? What action plan do you need to create that will help you build your platform?
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, never stop believing in what you are trying to achieve.
In order to thrive as a Christian Author, you cannot afford to lose faith in your mission and purpose. There is just too much work involved in this process for you to consider quitting. Either you will commit to your call or you will not. And if you think that you can’t do the work, but you still have the passion to see your ministry flourish, then it’s time to work on your mind.
Start declaring the Word of the Lord over your ministry. Speak over it daily, in the morning and evening. Recondition your mind to see your ministry as God sees it.
What will eventually happen is you will create a burning desire for your dream. You will almost start to feel an obsession for it, and I mean that in a good way. You will become so concerned with fulfilling your mission as one of God’s writers that it will be impossible for anyone to talk you out of doing this work.
When you feel like your faith is low and you’re becoming frustrated with your ministry’s progress, go back to what the Lord says concerning His work for you. Again, never stop believing in what you are trying to build, because this speaks volumes of your attitude towards the things of God.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, learn how to prioritize your time. Learn the art of productivity.
You should never be working on anything that won’t bring your writing ministry results.
As you are building your Author Platform, stay focused on giving your time to adding effective methods. For example, blogging is the law of the land when it comes to Christian Writerpreneurship, and I wrote the rule for that! You cannot neglect this type of content marketing tool, because you are a writer and readers need to see what you have to offer. Therefore, it’s imperative that you make blogging a major part of your Author Platform. You must prioritize this over anything else, including writing more books. I know that may seem counterproductive, but it’s not. Blogging will help you sell more books, more services, and more products.
When it comes to other marketing methods, maybe adding videos to your Author Platform doesn’t take priority for you, and that’s OK. Maybe you want to add this to your platform over time, but perhaps it’s not something that you intend to commit to every week right now.
The key is to figure out what you have to do consistently, and then make that a priority for your writing ministry. Put it in your schedule each week so that you don’t neglect it. Trust me! You will thank yourself later for doing this bit of priority at the start.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, have the courage to do what others aren’t willing to do.
When you’re first starting in this endeavor, people will say all types of things about you. They will call you foolish, lazy, and irresponsible. They will try to convince you to stop in your mission.
Here’s my rule: IGNORE THEM!
Ignore them at all cost. They will cause you to lose your inheritance.
Do not listen to the critics. They often deflect their own person insecurities onto you because they lack the faith to believe in their own mission.
Have the courage to defend your calling, not with words but with your deeds. Prove to them that God has called you by showing up every time. You can accomplish this by adding to your Author Platform on a consistent basis, without fear or trepidation.
I’ve had my share of people closest to me who tried to convince me to neglect my calling. They wanted my calling to look like theirs. They wanted me to do things the same way that they do them. And I tried it, only to find myself completely unhappy and dissatisfied.
Once I started to walk out my truth and to be what I could see for myself, then I began to flourish. When people told me to quit my writing ministry and to “get out there again to find a real job,” I gave them a firm, “No.” And I was bold enough to cut them off from my circle until I had enough “evidence” to prove that I was in the will of God.
So, as you’re constructing your Author Platform, make sure that you are willing to do what others won’t do. Other people won’t have the courage to sacrifice everything for the sake of the call. But you will. So, be strong in your endeavors.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, share your success and struggles with those of like precious faith.
There is a reason for this: Whenever you find yourself hitting a wall, the last people you want to share this with are those who can’t understand your call. So, surround yourself with other Christian Authors who can support you on this journey. This is a feature that I’m developing within the Empowered Writerpreneurs Program. Over time, my network within the school will grow, which will enable each member to find accountability partners, friends, and master minds. Nothing is more powerful than that.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, never be afraid to take risks.
You may find that as you begin to build your platform, new ideas will come to you. And when they come, you must determine if they are worth the risk and the reward. But even as you consider this, never be afraid to take a chance on something.
I remember when I was on the verge of shutting down my social media platform. I could not figure out how to engage with my audience authentically. But I tried something a little risky by sharing my views related to politics, the Lord, and the pro-life movement. And guess what? Those discussions caused my following to explode.
That’s when I realized that sometimes you have to take a chance on what you receive from the Lord. When it’s Him, people can’t help but to respond.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, always be sure to have a heart of gratitude.
When you think about all that readers do online, it’s a mark of honor for them to stop by your Author Platform. When they engage with your posts or share them with their following, be sure to thank them. In some way or another, they are giving you their approval and support. And when that happens, it should give you the confidence you need to press forward.
When thinking about your writing ministry and Author Platform, be sure to enhance your understanding by reading empowering books.
