Greetings, Dear Writerpreneur,
I pray that you are well.
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I will teach you why your success as a Christian Author is dependent on your willingness to treat it as a business.
In today's post, I want to teach you why it's important that you incorporate research skills into your authorship.
Quite often, new and aspiring Christian Authors make the mistake of simply "writing from the heart" in all their works, paying little attention to the details that go into a great work.
And while you can reach the point to where you produce high-quality books that don't require extra research time, you have to master this skill over a period of years.
But you can do it! For this reason, I want to engage with you on the topic of research, especially for your books.
So, let's get into this teaching.
Paying Attention to the Details
Before I begin diving into today's main topic, I want to share with you an experience I had when I taught high-school English.
One of the challenges that I often encountered was students not reading the directions before completing a task. So, one day, I decided to teach my entire class a lesson in this very thing.
I formulated a test that was exceptionally long, about 100 multiple choice questions. In the “Directions” section, I wrote about 4 or 5 sentences, explaining to the students what they were to do with the test. I knew that many students wouldn’t read the directions, so I deliberately put at the end of the instructions the following statement:
“If you have read the entire directions and have reached this point, then do the following: Write you name on the test, circle A for number 15, and turn in your exam. Be sure not to say anything to the other students if you figured this out.”
I wanted to test how many students would actually do what I instructed, and to my surprise, only a few students actually followed instructions carefully.
As each one of these students brought their test to me—of course, after only about five minutes of having it in their possession—the other students began to question what they were doing and why.
The “lost” students had a perplexed expression on their face, while the other students (who had followed directions) simply smiled at them. It was hilarious.
After about ten minutes, I could take it no longer. I finally told the rest of the class that this was a lesson in following directions. I told them explicitly that had they read ALL the instructions, they would know that they didn’t need to complete every question.
This, of course, relieved many of them, but some were annoyed that they were about to complete a test that they didn’t have to do.
I bring up this story to illustrate a point.
Even as writers, we have an obligation to research and review related materials that will help us make the right decisions about our books. We have to read previous materials so that when we prepare to construct our works, we don't produce something that will make us look foolish later.
While my students may not have been researching anything at the time of my experiment, had they done some pre-reading of the test, i.e. the instructions, then they would have saved themselves time and embarrassment.
This is the same principle that can be applied to you and the research you conduct for your books. Research has a way of helping you save time and avoid public embarrassment.
You don't want to construct books based on your opinion alone. You want to engage in pre-writing strategies--in this case, pre-reading other materials--so that you produce a high-quality piece.
And the reasons for this are many. Let's explore them.
5 Benefits of Conducting Research before Writing Your Books
Now we get into the meat of today's article. Here are several reasons why performing research is crucial to your professional authorship.
Research is Fundamental to Your Authorship
While conducting research is not always exciting, it is fundamental to your authorship.
If you want to be the go-to expert as it pertains to your books' topics, then you need to make sure that your product is phenomenal. You can't do that by simply writing whatever comes to mind.
I know that my teachings are revolutionary, and are certainly contrary to what many "Christian coaches" teach. But my lessons work. They not only inspire and motivate you, but they will come to show you how you can implement various strategies for your particular brand.
A little later, I will share with you how you can begin receiving my advanced teaching through my school. But let's chat a moment before I touch on that topic.
Now It's Your Turn to Share
So, what are your thoughts about research? How will you make this a part of your business plan as a Christian Author? Leave your answers for me in the comment section.
As I briefly touched upon in the previous section, my teachings regarding your Christian authorship are radical. They push you beyond your limits so that you can explore the possibilities of full-time authorship.
But the full weight of engaging in this endeavor cannot be completed without help and support. I want to be just that for you, but you must first be willing to take the next steps.

Step 2: Get Trained
The majority of new and aspiring Christian Authors assume that because God gave them the vision to write a book, then it's up to God to put everything together. They fail to realize that the success of their ministry is based on their training.
There are five pillars that Christian Authors generally lack:
