I pray that you are excelling in all that you put your hands to do. For today’s post, I want to share pertinent information regarding one powerful social media outlet, Instagram. And in case you have not created an account as an author, I want to encourage you to do so. There are several benefits to this platform, and being able to understand its purpose and how it generates interest will significantly increase your readership.
What is Instagram?
Instagram is a social media outlet that requires its users to incorporate visual representations to coincide with their texts. Without question, images and videos are the most effective way that people learn about others. And this spells good news for authors and writerpreneurs. If you take a look at the Instagram About Page, you will read that there is a community of 500 million people on this platform; and while this may be a perfect place for graphics designers or other visual artists, this is also a great place for authors to promote their works and connect with potential readers.
How does it work?
In the same way that you post images to Facebook, you can do the same with Instagram. You can take snapshots with your phone, let’s say of a book-signing event, and post it to your account. You can also use an app called Canva, which allows you to create posts that are already specified for platforms such as Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. (This is the tool I use to create all of LiyahAmore Publishing's posts on Instagram.) It’s very quick and easy to use, and you can save each post in the Canva platform. Once you make your images, you can then add text to your post, sharing more information about the picture and whatever else you want to convey to your audience. This is also the place where you want to include relevant hashtags that will place your post among other related posts. And in case you were wondering how long it will take to set up your account, you're looking at an astounding 5 MINUTES! However, when it comes to creating an effectively powerful strategy for this account, this will take time and diligence on your part. But once you have your routine in place, it will become much easier.
How can Authors use this?
While it’s easy to simply post images of your book cover and expect people to like and engage with it, in truth, that will not happen as often as you like. You want to be strategic with every image you place, giving attention to how it all relates to your brand and your authorship. For example, my latest magazine project, AmoreSpeaks is on this platform. I create images that have quotations of the writers for this magazine; I also include visuals that relate to the magazine such as healthy food, family images, and fashion ensembles. Without actually saying, “Subscribe to the magazine,” my images are telling a story and becoming personal for the audience. They are connecting with the brand through various means. One of the things that I noticed was that people respond and engage more often when I include images of me and my daughter than when I incorporate images of random people. I can only speculate why that might be so; but I do believe it’s because people are connecting with the person behind the brand. And this is what you want to do with your Instagram account as well. Connect with your audience using images that represent you or ARE YOU! Don't be afraid to do this because people want to connect with real people and not simply ads.
You want all of your images to help you meet your goals as a writerpreneur. If you want people to join your email list, then create an image on Instagram with a special offer for those who sign-up to join. For example, one way that I grow my email list for AmoreSpeaks is to invite female writerpreneurs to enter their name for a chance to be featured in the magazine. I've created this incentive, and so far, it's working. If you want to hold a giveaway, then create an image with that information on it. Whatever your goals are for your authorship, bring that into visual formation for your readers. In this way, you aren’t coming across as pushy; rather, you are offering a valuable, engaging experience for your people.

So, as you can see, there are wonderful ways that you can expand your readership by using Instagram.
