There were times when I sat in my dark places – places of shame – and allowed myself to be tormented. God had to remind me that I was not my past as long as I turned it over to Him for reparation. God created my spirit as a candle for Him so He could search me. (Proverbs 20:27: “The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.”)
He knows our thoughts before we do. He understands why we think the things we think and do the things we do. He fathoms why we are angry, frustrated, hurt, disappointed, or in pain. The Bible tells us that out of the abundance of our hearts our mouths speak. When we want our “secrets” kept, we are saying we want our spirits to remain in the dark.
From the beginning of time, God declared light in darkness. He never intended for us to remain in dimly lit surroundings. As our spirits are His candle, He can reveal to us those things that are unlike Him. As long as we hold onto our troubled pasts, and allow them to clutter our future, we are showing our need for His light.
We are not the sum of the acts done to us or by us. We are not the abandoned child, the rejected spouse, the betrayed mother or father, the abused woman or child. We are not the drug addict, the sex offender, the abuser, the liar, the whore or whoremonger, the murderer or thief if we have come to God in truth, seeking forgiveness. (Isaiah 53:5: “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.”
1 John 1:9 reads, “If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought and action].”
Still, there are some of us who would love for our secrets to remain in the dark. However, we can never truly be free from our pasts until we shed light on them – until they are poured out. (Isaiah 29:15: “Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and think, 'Who sees us? Who will know?'”)
We must do whatever we can to lay our souls bare before God. He is not out to harm us. As Jeremiah 29:11 reads, “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” There is no reason to continue to hide behind the pain of our pasts. If we have to cry, then so be it. Psalm 56:8 tells us that God puts our tears into His bottle and lists them in His book.
The more I took hold of the adversary’s lies, the more I lessened my hold on God’s truth. The devil wanted me to remain in bondage to that which had been done to me. God did not condemn me for telling the truth - in fact, He required it. (James 5:16: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective”).
Do not continue to revisit those places. Break the box by speaking the truth and being made free. Let us open our mouths and confess all things to God. He is faithful and will forgive us. He will give us a testimony to share about His goodness. Let us open our mouths and free ourselves from the snare of the enemy. Silence will keep our “beautiful” boxes intact, but our souls will be in disrepair. The blessing of redemption will never be experienced if we do not break the box and pour out what God has delivered us from. This act of breaking will produce a sweet smelling savor in the nostrils of our Lord. The Bible tells us in Genesis 8:21, “the Lord smelled the pleasing odor as the scent of satisfaction to His heart.”
