I tried to imagine what could have been going through the mind of the woman with the alabaster box. People ridiculed her and her choice to pour out the precious ointment. They just did not understand her “waste.” She was willing to break the jar and pour out of what she had been saving.
Despite those who may have a negative response to my true act of worship, I had to free myself of that which I had been holding. I was not to be ashamed. I was not to hesitate. I was to look to God for His response. Isaiah 61:3a: “To grant [consolation and joy] to those who mourn in Zion – to give them an ornament (a garland or diadem) of beauty instead of ashes …”
When we act or respond out of previous experiences, we are giving our pasts open access to our future. Once we accept the offering of Jesus Christ, He is responsible for the outcome of our lives. God is waiting for us to desire a relationship with Him over everything else. True freedom comes from opening our hands and letting go. Psalm 81:6 reads, “He says, "I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket.”
We do not have to deal with anything alone, no matter what the memories tell us. Christ came so we can experience abundant living (John 10:10 “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance…).
I had to keep in mind that there was someone reclining at a table, waiting for my offering. There’s someone who will be free once my hands were freed from the basket. My past was not for me to hold onto and relive. I was to remember Philippians 3:13 where Paul stated that he strained forward to what laid ahead. Straining denoted that a great deal of effort needed to be put forth in order to push pass his past.
It is not going to be easy to put off those things that we may have so carefully put on and tucked away. We have been using them for self-preservation. We have been duped into believing that if we hold onto the offenses that have come our way, we can protect ourselves from similar hurts. This mindset goes against trusting God – we have stepped into trusting ourselves. We develop mechanisms by holding back and hiding our hurt or pain. We disguise our frailties with arrogance, caustic words, anger, and an unforgiving spirit. We shadow our fear with subtle lies, afraid of the result of our truth. There is no trust in those actions.
The woman openly broke her alabaster box, her secret wealth, and poured it out without thought of reprisal. God is willing to accept our sacrifice and all it cost for us to obtain it. Let’s take the time to find the hidden treasure. Let’s open our hearts to the One Who is capable of protecting us. He can create in us a clean heart so we can worship Him. There isn’t anything in our boxes that will cause separation from God. On the contrary, as we pour it out, it frees us, allowing Him to speak to it and turn it around for our good. The contents of our boxes, along with the testimony of how God healed us, is meant to bring freedom to someone else.
It will take a conscience choice to open our mouths and speak about what we have been through. God will give us the strength to break our alabaster boxes and guide us to the person in need of what we have to offer. There can be no greater joy than to see someone walk in victory because we broke open our alabaster boxes.
