Book Review: Chronicles of a Vixen: Part 1
This week, I had the pleasure of reading the urban Christian novel, Chronicles of a Vixen. It’s the story of a young woman’s struggle to find true joy in the midst of unmitigating, distressing circumstances. This novel begins with Tiffany, the protagonist, set in a hospital bed, facing the suddenness of death. It is unclear from the beginning what situation placed her in intensive care; yet the narrator, Tiffany, provides a general idea of what led to her circumstance—a “deal” as she calls it. The prologue immediately creates a sense of mystery for the reader. Almost instantly, we are introduced to the presence of dark forces that surround the main character, which undoubtedly represent demonic spirits, awaiting to take her soul. Relief for the character, however, is found in Brenda, the hospital nurse. It is through their intimate conversations that we begin to see the life that Tiffany has lived, not only as a successful industry mogul, but also as a beautiful, yet tarnished, little girl. The tales of hardships, betrayal, and sacrifice instantly capture the reader’s attention. And one is left wondering how Tiffany will ever make it.
My evaluation of the book initially began with mixed emotions. The title itself, Chronicles of a Vixen, led me to believe that the work would contain sexually-explicit materials, which is not what I read. Realizing, however, that the author was a Believer, I took the chance and read the novel. I’m glad I did. The storyline successfully builds suspense; and while certain portions seemed to drag a bit—in terms of the character’s feelings towards her mother—the action of the story is striking. The author successfully left me wanting more by the end of the book, which will inevitably cause me to purchase Part 2.
Although I have never been a fan of urban Christian novels, Author Rochester had made me one, at least of her works. I thoroughly enjoyed the message of Christ that came through the pages. It demonstrated itself realistically in and through the characters. By the end of the book, the reader is presented with an invitation to know the Lord. Clearly, this Author is using her gift to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Readers can purchase this book through Amazon. For those who are Kindle Unlimited members, the book is free. Non-members may buy the book for $0.99.
As a hard critic of Christian novels, I find this work to be both powerful and emotional. We often do not understand the kind of life that some people encounter because we may have not personally experienced it. But when we can see redemption through the eyes of others, whether fictional or not, we inevitably develop the same compassion that Christ has for the lost.
I encourage you to purchase this book, and buy one for a young adult as well.
I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
