"Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God. Please open your hearts to us. We have not done wrong to anyone, nor led anyone astray, nor taken advantage of anyone. I’m not saying this to condemn you. I said before that you are in our hearts, and we live or die together with you. I have the highest confidence in you, and I take great pride in you. You have greatly encouraged me and made me happy despite all our troubles" (2 Corinthians 7:1-4).
Sometimes in life we feel defeated—to the point that we feel like giving up. Giving up on life, relationships, our children, our job, and even our dreams. I’ve felt that way on more than one occasion, especially when it came to my dreams, my relationships, and my children. At times, I felt like I was not good enough or smart enough to achieve my goals. In school, the teachers said I had a mild retardation, and I may have struggled with that at times. But look at God! He gave me the talent that I have. I continue to trust and keep my confidence in Him.
In most of my relationships, I put my all into them, having the confidence that things would get better, especially during the troubled times. Even though it is beneficial to have confidence in your mate, we can’t lose ourselves in the process or forget that we have feelings and emotions as well. Most of my past relationships ended in heartbreak. I thought I was the problem, that perhaps I needed to look in the mirror to see if there was anything that I needed to change about myself. Now, my mentality on relationships is totally different than it was before. I learned to pray more, not just for my mate but also for myself. I learned to not lose hope, but to pray that the relationship be covered by the Blood of Jesus—that the adversary cannot have any power over our relationship.
Regarding my children, at times I felt like a horrible mother. Did I listen enough? What if I said “I love you” more? Did I pray enough? Sometimes, I felt like the more I prayed for my teenage child, the more it seemed like it was good versus evil in my home and in his heart. What I mean is that at time, while I believed he wanted to do better to make me proud, he would also do things that disappointed me, things like hanging out late and putting his trust in negative peers. These peers were into drugs, alcohol, premarital sex, gang activity, and much more. At times, I felt like giving up on this child; but then I remembered my own childhood and the mistakes I made as a teenager. The Holy Spirit reminded me that while I was dealing with good and evil in my heart, I had a praying, God-fearing grandmother. She prayed for all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren…even her ex-husband! She was what you called a prayer warrior. So, I started thinking, Why am I sitting here, feeling defeated as a mother and dream chaser? I wasn’t a prayer warrior. Those here-and-there prayers weren’t cuttin’ it! I needed to do more.
I believe in my heart and soul that in order to build confidence, we need to start with prayer. We need to be a prayer warrior. We need to build a foundation within our minds to say that “My dreams will come true! I will have success in my relationships. I will not give up! My teenage child is going to do great things in life. That one day, he will have a powerful testimony.”
Everyone is equipped to be confident. It starts with becoming a prayer warrior.
