Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
Do you know God? Do you love Him? Or do you simply love Him for what He has done for you? Are your prayers centered on your desires or His will for your life? Do you seek to know Him intimately and personally?
I have found that God is loving, patient, kind, and even humorous. I have found Him to be jealous of my time and attention. He redirects me when I tend to put too many things in front of “our” time.
Sometimes, our relationships with God can be shallow, based solely on worldly things because that’s what our reality is made of. In these times, our spiritual eyes and ears have yet to be opened to a deeper way of thinking, and we operate on a surface level. We have not yet matured in Christ, allowing Him to mold and shape us into His image. We have resisted learning from our trials and tribulations because we fear the “going through” as much as we fear the outcomes of these trials.
Yet, when we know God and spend time with Him and His word, we have no need to worry. We can declare His promises over our lives and stand firm on them. We begin to realize that trials come to shape us, and we don’t have to buckle under the pressure. Instead, we walk in His word and rest in His arms. We cannot accomplish this feat if we don’t truly seek to know Him.
He invites us into a quiet place to spend time with Him. Praying to Him requires a disciplined lifestyle. Prayer does not simply consist of you doing all the talking, but earnestly listening to what He wants to say to you. How will you ever know the plans He has for you or the direction He’s giving you if you don’t wait patiently to hear what He has to say? I personally struggle with the “listening” aspect. Some days are easier than others; yet I push on, because I understand that relationships are meant to be reciprocal.
Listening for God’s voice requires patience and self-discipline. Tune out all distractions. Make sure that anything you deem as pressing has been completed. The last thing you want to do is put time restrictions on God the way you would on earthly things. Clear your heart and mind, as some of the older pastors would say; and get into a place of solitude, waiting patiently for Him. He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth" (Psalm 46:10).
Don’t take Him for granted, for He is the Creator of all life. He cares for you and wants what’s best for your life. We should pray to Him in the good times as well as the bad. We should always seek to build a relationship with Him, and love Him as He has loved us.
“Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon” (Isaiah 55:6-7).
Whenever you earnestly seek to know Him, He will draw closer to you, too (James 4:8) He isn’t hiding from you or too busy to share quiet time with you. It’s just the opposite; He’s waiting for you to come into His presence. He loves you and longs to hear your voice. He yearns for you to know Him more. There’s so much He has in store for you: in healing, deliverance, freedom, growth, peace, and love. Once you began to know Him more intimately, you’ll be surprised at how much better you know yourself. After all, His Spirit resides on the inside of you.
Seek Him for Who He is, not for what He’s doing. He promises we will find Him when we seek Him with our whole heart (Jeremiah 29:13). When you earnestly know Him, you’re empowered to turn away from your sins. It’s impossible to know Him and continue in the way you were before you knew Him. He will bless you with wisdom and spiritual understanding, empowering you to live a fulfilled life, free from the shackles of this world.
Never hesitate to carve out one-on-one time with God. He’s waiting.
