Greetings, Dear Writerpreneur,
I pray that you are well.
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where you will learn an important lesson on the power of content marketing for Christian Authors.
Today's article will introduce you to one of my empowering e-books, Content Marketing: A Guide for Christian Authors and Writerpreneurs. This has been my best-selling resource to date, and I am confident that it will be an added benefit to your training as an author.
Before I get into the depths of this article, let me share with you how this book emerged.
For years now, I’ve contended with the way Christian Authors promote their books, especially in Facebook authors’ groups.
And over the years, I have witnessed many writers become distraught by the minimal sales they have received, which ultimately made them feel like a failure in this venture.
If I were to ask you about your marketing strategy as an author, what could you tell me? If you rated your marketing techniques on a scale of 1-10, which number would you choose and why?
I believe these are important questions to consider because they ultimately determine how you will connect your brand and products to your ideal audience.
What methods will you use? What platform will you create? What social media site will you use? And once you have identified these platforms, what will you say and how will people receive you?
These are the many factors that come into place when we are talking about marketing as a Christian Author; and this simply cannot be accomplished if you're only form of marketing happens on social media and in various groups.
There's has to be more.
When I first began promoting my first book, Fear, Faith & Patience, I did the typical promotion. I threw my book cover into Facebook groups, and hoped for the best. I did a few blog talk radio interviews, and still hoped for the best. And do you know how many sales I generated from them?
That’s right: NO SALES!
On the other hand, as I look back on that experience, I realized that the sales I did generate from that book came not from complete strangers, but from people within my own sphere of influence. In other words, the people who bought my book were the ones who already knew me and wanted to purchase the book directly from me.
That’s a lesson that you want to consider with your authorship.
While I am not suggesting that you pressure your family and friends to purchase your book, what I want you to think about is why they might do it anyways. Most likely, the answer is because they know you. They like you. They want to support you.
So, how can you maximize on this knowledge so that a greater audience feels the same way about your books? This is where content marketing comes into play. And this is what I want to share today in this post, and what I expound upon in my book.
What Is Content Marketing?
To answer this question, I began conducting research on this topic.
As you may know (or may not know), I’m an avid researcher. I don’t share anything with my audience—whether personal, political, or business-wise—without having something to fall back on.
So, even as I teach you about this topic and share this lesson, it’s based on my understanding of what the experts do.
I have shared in other posts that I readily follow Dale Partridge of StartUpCamp.com and Regina of byRegina.com. Their wisdom and understanding on online business has truly impacted my own.
And recently, I began following Brian Clark, founder of Copyblogger.com. He is the expert for me when it comes to content marketing. And if you follow his blog and enroll in his digital e-commerce school, then you will know why I have chosen him.
What I do on my end is I translate that information so that it becomes understandable for you as a Christian Author. In other words, I synthesize the information and make it useful for you specifically.
So, here's what you need to know about content marketing.
This type of marketing is about creating valuable, useful resources that help you build an audience that will then build your business.
It’s what you use to attract customers—or, in your case, readers—who will purchase your books and eventually become repeat buyers.
It involves building trust with your perfect prospect, who in turn will like you and your product, and remain loyal to you and your brand. And this method works PHENOMENALLY.
Consider what I am currently doing for you with my blog posts, which is a form of content marketing.
I am educating you about a topic that’s important to you: developing your Christian authorship. And I am providing you with valuable information so that you can be informed and empowered.
In essence, I am sharing with you precious knowledge that will impact your ability to sell books and build a thriving writing ministry, which is at the heart of every Christian Author.
In turn, this builds trust between us both, even if we have never met.
You get a taste of what it would be like to work with me or to purchase my products, and will feel safe in knowing that if my free content is impactful (i.e. the blog posts), then surely the paid products (which are my premium materials) will be outstanding.
And that’s how content marketing works for you. It never fails.
I remember when I first decided to create the Empowered Writerpreneurs Program. I knew that I had a great product, but I simply did not know if people would enroll in it.
I didn’t know how to convince people to pay for an online course, even if I knew it was transformational. But as I began employing my content marketing strategies (blog posts, webinars, e-mail marketing strategies), I found that if I could provide value at the first level, I didn’t have to worry about if someone would buy. It was a matter of when.
So, when the first launch of the Program emerged in October 2016, I met my goal of having the first set of students in the course.
It wasn’t chance or luck, but pure strategy.
I didn’t manipulate anyone to enroll. I simply wrote about the value, and built a relationship with my readers—like you—and delivered on my promise.
You have to see that connection.
It’s the principle of content marketing that works, regardless of what you sell and regardless of your brand. It all falls back on delivering great content and building trust.
What Does Content Marketing Look Like for Christian Authors?
The answer to this question is simply complex. (There’s an oxymoron for you.)
As a Christian Author, you must employ content marketing into your business plan and marketing strategy.
But the difficulty is knowing which types of content marketing will work for you and why.
In my case, blogging had to be in my marketing plan because I am working with writers. It’s not the only method I use, but it is the primary one.
Blogging, I would advise, should be the primary content marketing strategy for you, too, because you’re a writer. If you’re asking people to purchase your book, then you should have something for them to sample. You should begin establishing that blogging platform so that your readers begin to trust you.
In addition to that, you should possess some expertise. If you aim to write books about surviving breast cancer, and you have never gone through that process or experienced it first-hand, don’t write about it unless you have become a scientist (or researcher) of that topic.
If you want to write books about building a relationship with the Lord, and you hardly have one, don’t write a book about it. Why? Because you will come across as a fraud, and that will throw trust out the door.
So, as a Christian Author, I want to push you to employ blogging as a content marketing strategy. I share much more about this in my Content Marketing Book.
Here are two of the many strategies that I discuss in my book.
I personally love these, and would also encourage you to employ this strategy as well.
Give your audience an opportunity to hear directly from you. Not only can they read your posts and engage with your comments, but they can see and hear your voice through video presentations or webinars. This is a powerful way to make a lasting impression with your audience.
Much like the traditional blog, vlogging involves communicating value to your audience through consistent videos.
You can create a YouTube channel, and have readers subscribe to it. You can upload videos on a consistent schedule so that your subscribers remain connected to you.

Step 2: Get Trained
The majority of new and aspiring Christian Authors assume that because God gave them the vision to write a book, then it's up to God to put everything together. They fail to realize that the success of their ministry is based on their training.
There are five pillars that Christian Authors generally lack:
