For this post, I want to briefly teach you about the role you play as an expert for a given topic. Keep in mind that as a writerpreneur, you are more than just a writer. You are employing methods and strategies that will assist you in generating wealth for the long-run. You aren’t simply focused on selling books; instead, you are thinking about how your books will open other doors of opportunities for you. And in today’s post, I want to give you 1 of 3 ways that you can establish authority and credibility with your books, solidifying your expertise in an area that will cause others to look towards you for a given thing. Here we go!
To begin, it’s important that I break down the terms “credibility” and “authority.”
When you think about how this translates into your work as an author, you must begin to think about yourself as an expert or one that carries authority to address an issue or circumstance; one that is able to provide a solution to others. Now, this is certainly easily applicable to writers of non-fictional texts. But it can also cross over into the other sphere. For example, Toni Morrison (she’s my favorite, by the way) routinely created books about African American women and the many struggles they encountered as a result of racism, sexism, etc. Her works, albeit fiction, had a message/moral/story that allowed her to present possible solutions to these issues. Morrison’s niche, if you will, centers on this particular segment; and as such, she has become an authority or expert on the topic.
In like manner, you must begin to see your work as a way of establishing credibility and authority for your given specialty; and as you commit towards putting your expertise into a published book, you demonstrate to others how serious you are about providing a solution to a problem. This is the making of a great writing career. This is how you create doors of opportunities. As more people learn about your expert advice, they will call upon you to share your knowledge and insight with others.
