I was driving and listening to Kirk Franklin’s song, “Wanna Be Happy,” after church on Sunday. The first time I heard the song, the lyrics jarred something inside of me. This Sunday as I listened to them again, they struck a different chord.
I begin to think about the battle of good and evil that we all fight. Some people deny there is any evil within them, but I disagree. We all hold some form of evil and good within us. The times when we want revenge against another person; or the times when we grow jealous of someone who is experiencing a blessing. These thoughts and emotions rise from an evil heart. The evil manifests itself in different ways: greed, envy, anger, etc.
The part of the song that resonated with me was “…if I keep on doing the things that keep on bringing me pain, there’s no one else I can blame if I’m not happy. Wasted time but now I can see, the biggest enemy, it was me…” Those lyrics are powerful, because how often do we recognize that our greatest enemy is within ourselves? We often get in our own way, blocking our success, our happiness, our healing, and our deliverance.
We get in our way when we focus on those hurts, allowing our pain to dictate our actions. The attitudes we hold towards other people; the behaviors we portray may all result from a place of hurt. We use this hurt to justify our actions towards others, which lead to self-destructive behavior.
Whether it’s a past offense, our mistakes, or whatever our history may contain, we sometimes find it difficult to be happy and move forward. We think that we have healed or moved on with our lives until we stop one day and take a look at our actions and decisions. Our lives have become a circle of doing the same things again and again.
The term, “Gilgal,” has come to take on several meanings as it relates to the Bible. There are also a few different places that the Israelites referred to as Gilgal. However, the term that I am using refers to the “circular."
I heard a pastor use this term as referencing the circular motions that our lives take, especially because we make the same poor decisions or become stuck in indecisiveness. This occurs when we fail to release our past and move forward in our future. In order to combat this, we must first determine that we want to be healed, and then we must take the first step. Looking to our Savior and asking for His healing, we can be certain we will receive it. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).
Moving forward to receive the healing He offers will not be an overnight conversion. Every day and every moment we must choose to do the right thing. We must choose to focus on positive thoughts and uplifting ideas. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).
Fighting our greatest enemy, which can be our own self, is a daily battle. Forcing away negative thoughts and focusing on positive energy, we must believe we have received our healing and deliverance. We must begin to walk in our healing, daily claiming our deliverance. “We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak…” (2 Corinthians 4:13). We have to speak those things that we are believing God for in order to see them come to pass. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21).
Your greatest battle in this life will be the one you fight with yourself. Believe you deserve a good life of peace, joy, and righteousness. You can attain it by not being overcome by evil, but overcoming evil with good (Romans 12:21).
