A broken relationship. Failure to get the job you interviewed for. The loss of a loved one. Divorce. Not closing on the home of your dreams. A child going down the wrong path. Any lost opportunity or closed door can lead to disappointment, and ultimately depression if not handled properly. We question why would this happen to us, or sometimes we think, When will my time come?
There are seasons where we watch others come into blessing after blessing, and we begin to lose hope because of the seemingly unending disappointments we face. We were never given a promise that every day would bring bright and sunny days, or that we would not have any days clouded with darkness. As a matter-of-fact, we’re told just the opposite in Matthew 5:45: “He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
As I write this, I’m ministering to myself. There are some challenges that I’m facing that are disappointing to me. They have presented themselves as obstacles, even as I pursue my writing career. But God is removing the blinders, showing me a moment in time when He will use this situation for my good.
Sometimes the plans we have for our lives are not His plans. Other times, they are His plans; yet He accomplishes them differently than we expect. And I’m reminded that we must always be careful of what we pray, because it may not come in the way we anticipate. Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Choose to trust Him during this time and not on what you can see.
When facing disappointments, learn to look back on what God has done for you throughout your life. You have surely been blessed along the way, for if you had not, you would not exist. Focusing on the blessings you have received will guide you to a place of gratitude. It will also bring to mind God’s faithfulness.
Recalling His faithfulness will remove every doubt you have about your future. You will know that He will continue to be faithful in the future because “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
If the disappointment causes you to fear, focus on God’s promises. He says in Deuteronomy 31:6 to be courageous, encouraging us not to be scared because He will be with us along the way; and He promises to “never leave you nor forsake you.”
While you walk through disappointment, believe God will turn things around in your favor. He knows every situation and every outcome. He ensures that you will have a future and a hope, and that no harm will come to you. He will prosper you in the areas He has already ordained (Jeremiah 29:11). Trust that the plans God has for your life are better than anything you could dream or plan on your own.
He knows the dreams you hold within, for it was He who placed them there. Surely, if He gave them to you, He will equip you with every resource to accomplish them. Sometimes, He slows things down for us. He is teaching us to operate in His timing—not man’s timing—so that we will be prepared for the doors He will open, which no man can close.
If your disappointment stems from your own behaviors or actions, don’t hide. Face your issues head on, because that is the only way to deal with sin. Look within and determine why you opted to take the route that you took. Understanding your motives behind your actions will allow you to fully repent. Then confess to someone you trust and confess to God about your sins. Praying and having that other person pray on your behalf will surely heal you from your disappointment and sorrow. “…The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” (James 5:16).
Every disappointment that you experience can be turned into a victory. Simply recall God’s faithfulness, for all things work together for our good because we love Him and we’ve been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28.) Be opened to the lessons along the way. There is always something that you can take from every disappointing situation. Then you can look forward to the “Son” shining on the other side of your breakthrough.
