Back in January 2011, I decided to take control over my financial situation by doing what most people dream of doing: starting my own business. It wasn’t easy. The trouble was that I had no idea where to begin. I had recently resigned from a teaching career—a story that I highlight in my book, Fear, Faith, and Patience: My Fight for Justice in an Injustice System—and I needed to think quickly about what I would do next. Ideally, I had hoped to find employment in another industry, one that would pay me more money and possibly offer less stress. But that was not working in my favor. That’s when I decided to become financially independent by establishing myself as an editor and writer for private clients and organizations, and I have not looked back since.
For many people, the idea of working from home seems too far-fetched. Some people assume that others like myself are able to do it because we have no immediate financial needs or crises. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, creating my writing and editing business began out of my desperation for finding work. Little did I realize that nearly five years after making that decision, I would still be running this business and witnessing its growth and expansion.
Beginning a career as a freelance writer and editor is not as challenging as one may think. In my case, I had the advantage of having college degrees and work experience related to writing and editing. But even if you do not have these credentials, you can begin the process of establishing yourself as an expert in this field. One of the things I hope to accomplish with my blog is to inspire young women to consider this career as a viable option for establishing financial independence. Young women in particular face many challenges that often prevent us from establishing ourselves financially. In my case, I became a single mother with no job prospects, and I needed to create something that would sustain me and my daughter because I could no longer depend on others for assistance. That’s when I honed in on my expert skills in writing and editing.
If you love to write and have some skills in performing editing services for others, then you can and will make a living within this industry, and I want to help you in that endeavor. At the time that I first began, I did not have someone to walk me through the steps. It was simply a case of faith, trial, and error. That’s it! But they were invaluable experiences from which I hope you and others can learn.
Now more than ever, people and companies are turning to freelance writers and editors to complete tasks that they simply need done immediately. In the next few blogs, I will share some of my own experiences in acquiring contracts from private clients and educational organizations, which have allowed me to be a stay-at-home mother and business woman. But for now, I hope to ignite a desire within my readers who are looking for ways to supplement their existing income (or add income if they have none) by becoming a writer and/or editor.
But I don’t want you to simply take my word for it. In this blog, I will provide valuable resources that will help you establish your writing and editing business. I will also direct you to other blogs and websites that will give you great tips on how to leverage your skills as a writer and editor. For example, you can find ideas on beginning your writing business by first learning about establishing a blog here. It took me years to learn much of what I know now, and I continue to learn more each day; but keep in mind that the work you put in is necessary for a strong output. You can do it, though! And with hard-work and determination, you will be well on your way to having a successful writing and editing career.
