Greetings, Christian Author!
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I share powerful tips that will help you become a thriving Christian Author.
I’m Felecia Killings, Executive Director of LiyahAmore Publishing, and I help Christian Writers like you build powerful, profitable, life-changing writing ministries.
I believe strongly that God has a special calling and assignment for each of His writers, and that we are to be used as His instruments to bring reformation, revival, and change to our world.
LiyahAmore Publishing first emerged in 2011, and has since become a premier epicenter for new and aspiring Christian Authors.
And we fulfill our mission by bringing you advanced training and educational resources that help you build a writing ministry that will last a lifetime.
In this article, I continue with my teaching on building an Author Platform that works. I have a great e-book that’s coming to the Store, which will give you the steps on how to build your Author Platform effectively; and how you can create a system of operations so that your platform begins to generate wealth for your writing ministry.
Today’s post will specifically help you understand how to expand your platform and presence on social media the RIGHT WAY. Far too many new Christian Authors make the mistake of using social media to spam their followers with “Buy My Stuff” content; and they neglect to use social media as a way of building connections. So, we will spend some time talking about that.
Today’s article features a wonderful service provider, Weebly.com. As an affiliate partner with this organization, I know that you won’t find better offers and customer services than with this platform. You can build your entire writing ministry through this site, and you will have everything you need and more to position your business to receive perpetual wealth.
To create a dynamic writing ministry using Weebly, simply tap the banners in this post, and get ready to be empowered.
Now, let’s get ready to jump into this lesson.
Let’s start by discussing what is meant by having an Author Platform: This is your online sphere of influence that you control. You determine what will and will not be shared on your platform; and you are able to establish your home base that will meet the specific needs and desires of your ideal readers.
The Author Platform is crucial to your growth and development as a Christian Writerpreneur. Without it, you will not thrive.
Consumers who come in contact with entrepreneurs that want to sell products or services are expecting those entrepreneurs to have an online space. Why? Because consumers want to learn more about these entrepreneurs before ever deciding to purchase their stuff.
And Christian Authors are no different.
The beauty of building your Author Platform is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get started. You can work with free platforms like Weebly to get going; and you can also take to social media to start expanding your platform. And that’s what I want to talk about today.
Social media has become THE epicenter for all things related to the world’s issues. Social media has brought people together from all over the world, and there is no sign that it will end.
Social media has been a crucial element for businesses that want to reach their targeted audience.
And authors who are on social media have come to use their platforms to connect with the perfect reader.
While social media has been instrumental in helping businesses grow, the rise in online entrepreneurship has led to new ways of company’s interacting with consumers.
For example, 7 years ago, an entrepreneur could easily build a large following by sharing products, ideas, services, and stories with their people. And as more of these business men and women began sharing their success, thousands of other business men and women started doing the same thing.
The problem was that people who get on social media don’t typically come there to purchase products or services. They want to engage in online social interactions.
As a result, social media platforms began changing their behavior to make these sites more user-friendly. And that meant that any business that wanted to specifically reach a targeted audience would have to “pay to play” in the game. Thus, we now see a huge spike in paid advertisements, which will only grow as the years progress.
So, what does this all mean for the new Christian Author?
For one, this means that you can engage in the game just as easily as businesses with larger budgets. The same lessons, strategies, and skills that these corporations use are also available to you as you seek to connect with your readers.
This also means that as a new Christian Author, you have no excuse for not participating on social media in order to build your Author Platform and overall writing ministry.
And for today’s post, I want to talk to you more specifically about how to use Facebook effectively to expand your Author Platform.
For the most part, you are familiar with Facebook. So, I won’t spend much time discussing that. More than likely, you connected with LiyahAmore Publishing because you watched one of my FB videos, read one of my posts, or somehow connected with me on that platform.
Facebook has helped me generate close to 95% of all my business, because I used this platform to launch my writing ministry.
In 2016, my Facebook influence began to change dramatically. Remember that it was in late 2015 when I decided that it was time to take my writing ministry seriously. So, in 2016, I started engaging with my audience in a different way.
Like most Christian Authors, I treated FB as a free marketing site. I would share a quick ad in the Christian Authors’ groups, crossing my fingers, hoping that someone would hire my services. But I quickly learned that this was annoying for me and futile for my business.
So, I started focusing on raising discussion questions and lessons that related to Christian Writerpreneurship and, of all things, politics.
Now, there’s nothing more controversial at this moment than politics, and I was more than ready to engage in the online discourse.
I started sharing my ideas about the current political climate, urging God’s people to do what was right in praying for godly leadership in the White House. And if we couldn’t secure someone who was fully committed to the faith, at least give us someone who would be a defender of religious freedom, someone who concerned himself with protecting our nation, and someone who knew how to bring prosperity back to our country.
Over the next several months, I continued to talk about the Lord and politics on my FB platform; and I subtly inserted that I believed that God was calling His writers to become active in this next revival that would sweep our nation.
What I noticed was that I was no longer talking about “hiring my services” on my page…at least not like I used to…and I began incorporating my profession into my highly-engaging FB posts.
And guess what?
My following grew exponentially.
I went from having roughly 500 followers to close to 4,000 followers in just a couple of months.
I had never seen such a spike in growth, and it was all because I started talking about issues that were important to my audience while simultaneously sharing my work as a Christian Author Coach.
Now, I want you to take a moment to analyze what I just shared. What do you notice about the sudden increase in following and engagement that took place on my page?
What I didn’t realize back then was that the fastest way to grow one’s audience was to talk about what that ideal audience wanted to discuss.
And it didn’t cost me hundreds of dollars to generate that following.
At the close of 2017, I realized that what I had learned over the last year was something that would help me become more strategic in expanding my Author Platform on social media. And at the start of 2018, I made a bold, yet risky, decision to close down my personal page in exchange for building my business page with the username, FeleciaKillingsMinistries.
There are reasons that I have for doing this, mostly because a business page allows me to monetize my content in ways that the personal page could not. But for the most part, it was a strategic move on my end, and I’m glad that I decided to move in this direction.
The lesson that I want you to pull from today’s post is that you must discover what is the best way to engage your following on Facebook and other social media platforms. And then once you have that engagement, you must determine how you can smoothly incorporate your books, products, and services into those discussions.
If you want to grow quickly online, then you must create a strategic plan of action that will help you reach specific goals. And I do share my Action Plan with you in my latest e-book, Building an Author Platform that Works!
Ultimately, expanding your Author Platform on social media will do wonders for your writing ministry. You will be able to learn more about your readers; you will learn more about their needs and desires; you will learn how they think; and you will discover how they want you to engage with them.
These are powerful tools that you can use to build your writing ministry the RIGHT WAY.
If you’re thinking that all you have to do is share a picture of your new book on social media, think again. Nobody wants to see that. Nobody cares.
But if you start to weave your works within the general discussions that you have online, then you will discover a “secret” that will help your business and writing ministry grow.
So, I want to challenge you to think differently about social media. Ask yourself what can you discuss on your platform that will speak of your brand? And how can you get others to share in those same discussions?
In my case, my Facebook platform highlights my brand as someone who wants revival and reformation in our nation…as someone who wants to use the power of the written word to help revolutionize the culture. And I work within that mission by providing services that help my audience members who want to become successful published authors.
So, start thinking about how you can use the same strategies to expand your Author Platform on social media. Yes, it will take time, but don’t be afraid to take a risk on discussing something that matters to your readers.
You may want to tackle the topic of domestic violence, especially if you share that story within your writing ministry.
You may want to tackle substance abuse…
You may want to tackle homelessness.
Whatever it is, remember that while online, people want to discuss matters that are relevant to them. They want practical solutions to their problems. And you can easily incorporate the Scriptures in your discussions.
Learn to have fun on social media and to think about the way you want to participate online. And I guarantee that you will see your authority and influence grow.
Now, if you enjoyed today’s Empowering Post, be sure to share this with your following.
