Alone at home. That TV show, rife with cursing, sexual immorality, and corruption calls out to you. You found a sack of money on top of a store ATM machine. No one is around. The cameras are not operating.
We should always live our lives in such a manner as if someone were watching us. What are you doing when others are not around? If your family, friends, co-workers, or church members gained access to a hidden camera and watched your actions when you thought no one was watching, what would they think? Would it have a negative impact on your relationships? Would it inspire them or turn them away? Would it change their opinion of you, and paint you in a negative or positive light?
If you’re honest with yourself as I am, you would probably be a bit embarrassed. Honestly, there are plenty of areas in my life that I need to clean up. From the words I speak to the actions I partake in, there are just some things that I would not want others to be privy to. This doesn’t make me a horrible person, or you either for that matter. It simply means there are some areas in our lives we need to address and deal with. We have challenges we need to face up to and allow God to clean up in our lives. I honestly want to hear, “Well done thy good and faithful servant,” at the end of it all.
I currently have a picture of a pen and a book as my Facebook banner. I have scripted on that picture the following statement: “I want my life to be an inspirational tale where God writes the story on the pages of my life. And my H.E.A. is ‘Well done thy good and faithful servant.’” (For those of you who may not be familiar with the term, H.E.A. it means “happily ever after.”)
I understand that all of us sin and fall short of His glory, and that we’re what I would like to call a “perfectly imperfect” people. However, it does not mean that we cannot continue to strive to be all that He designed us to be. It does not mean that we should settle in the place we’re in, accepting our flaws and making excuses for them, which I am guilty of. Instead we need to learn to live above reproach.
The Bible calls for us to live above reproach by being respectable, friendly, sober-minded, faithful (husband of one wife), and disciplined (1 Timothy 3:2). This same passage of Scripture goes on to warn us against being quarrelsome, violent, drunkards, and lovers of money.
Unfortunately, many times we find ourselves in these exact situations, quarreling with others over our differences of opinions rather than allowing the Spirit to convict them. “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17). Isn’t it amazing how we can take a strong stand on our “Christian” convictions and principles, yet become argumentative with those that don’t agree with us? What happened to the godly wisdom and principles we were just taking a stand for? He desires us to share the truth with others, but never to quarrel over these ideals. We are to plant the seeds, and He will send someone else along to water, while He gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6).
Money is one of the primary driving forces behind many things that lead us into sin. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs” (1 Timothy 6:10). People have found themselves in humiliating and disreputable situations just to gain a dollar. From the college student who decides to strip to pay for college, to the senator who allows his “palms to be greased,” in exchange for a favor to some wealthy businessman. People will sell out for a dollar, yet we all know that we cannot take the material things of this world with us once we die. We are to be content with the blessings He has bestowed upon us.
Trusting in Him will ensure that all of our needs are provided, and that we receive the protection He affords. We don’t have to allow ourselves to fall into destruction just to obtain wealth. Our Heavenly Father will supply our every need. We simply need to seek His Kingdom and righteousness, and He will take care of the rest (Matthew 6:33).
When you look in the mirror at night, or if someone caught you on an episode of “Candid Camera,” an old 70’s show, what would they see?
