Greetings, Dear Writerpreneur,
I pray that you are well.
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I teach you valuable reasons for implementing strategies for your business.
In this article, I want to teach you a little about financial independence. These are lessons that I have learned and continue to learn. And I pray that they empower you.
This post will show you how I struggled in this area, and how the Lord helped me (and continues to help me) with it, even as I work to build my thriving writing ministry.
I won’t pretend that I have it all together, either. I don’t. In fact, even as I teach others and share empowering content with you, I am also learning these strategies and implementing them.
I think quite often, as we read about success stories of bloggers and best-selling, self-published authors, we tend to become intimidated by their current success. What we don’t see—mostly because it’s an ugly truth that many want to hide—is the struggle that they encountered in order to reach their level of success.
I remember several months ago when I began taking my company more seriously so that I could really scale it to maximum potential, I had read several blog posts about these great influencers who legitimately earned millions of dollars through the use of blogging.
And I was amazed to see how their creative genius helped get them to that place.
At times, it felt overwhelmingly simple, if I can even use such an oxymoron. In other words, the message they presented was a simple message of “just blog;” yet, they did not give the full picture of the steps they took to bring about that success, which is actually an overwhelming feat.
I thought about doing this same thing. I thought about waiting a couple of years before I shared my “success story” so that I could impress you and my audience, giving you solid reason to purchase all my products and services. After all, it is the trend in the entrepreneurial world today.
But it just didn’t feel authentic to me. I didn’t want to wait five or ten years before I began sharing with you how I “made it.” I wanted to take my audience along the ride with me so that they can see both the good and the bad, the ugly and the beautiful.
And this brings me to the message of this article.
While I can lie to you and tell you that I have arrived and that I’m making a 6-figure income every year, in truth, that is not the case as of today. But I am pressing towards this goal—for reasons I will share—and I am currently witnessing how my change in attitude and perspective is positioning me to become financially independent as a woman and a mother.
And I want to share this story with you and how I am making this progress. I hope these lessons will inspire you as well.
How the Journey Began
Back in January 2011, I decided to take control over my financial situation by doing what most people dream of doing: starting my own business.
It wasn’t easy.
The trouble was that I had no idea where to begin. I had recently resigned from a teaching career—a story that I highlight in my book, Fear, Faith, and Patience: My Fight for Justice in an Injustice System—and I needed to think quickly about what I would do next.
Ideally, I had hoped to find employment in another industry, one that would pay me more money and possibly offer less stress. But that was not working in my favor. In fact, I had applied and interviewed for so many positions that it seemed like I would land a better job in no time.
But I didn’t, and it began to discourage me, especially because I had a responsibility to provide for my daughter. My husband at the time had abandoned us, involved himself in criminal activity, and landed himself in prison for 7 years. This was on top of the physical and verbal abuse that I allowed him to inflict on me for a number of years.
For a while, I stayed with his family as they gave me a home for me and Aaliyah, but that situation become so bleak and distorting that I had to leave.
I had no job, no prospects, and no financial support whatsoever.
I couldn’t count on any assistance from him or his family because unless I stayed in that abusive relationship, they would do nothing to help me.
I was lost and confused, and felt abandoned by the Lord. But He never left me. I simply needed to recommit myself to Him.
As I began to put my emotional life back on track—through the help of the Holy Spirit and my family—I knew that in order for me to gain some confidence and stability, I would need to reposition myself to obtain financial independence. But it wasn’t easy.
As I mentioned before, I had applied to several jobs, but I could not land a permanent position. I couldn’t go back into teaching immediately because I had to deal with a criminal matter, of which you can read in my book.
I didn’t realize it then, but it would take two years before my name was cleared and the case dismissed; but by the time that happened, my heart grew cold towards the public education system.
Media had bashed my good name, and I felt like a leper who was cast out of something unjustly. Emotionally, I became bitter and angry. And the Lord had to deliver me from that before it completely destroyed me.
Discovering How to Become Independent Again
Financially, I needed another way to make money, and I needed something that would last. That’s when I decided to become financially independent by establishing myself as an editor and writer for Christian Authors.
In essence, starting my own business opened this door of opportunity. I needed a company that would allow me to stay at home with my daughter while also earning substantial income to help us live. And I found it by employing my writing and editing skills into my self-publishing company, LiyahAmore Publishing.
When I first began in 2011, it was nothing spectacular.
I had a generic website and a couple of clients. But it was a start, and I was at home.
For many people, the idea of working from home seems too far-fetched. Some people assume that others like myself are able to do it because we have no immediate financial needs or crises. That couldn’t be further from the truth, as you have already learned.
In fact, creating my writing and editing business began out of my desperation for finding work. Little did I realize that years after making that decision, I would still be running this business and witnessing its growth and expansion.
Beginning a career as a freelance writer and editor is not as challenging as one may think. In my case, I had the advantage of having college degrees and work experience related to writing and editing.
Because I had taught English to high school students, I knew that I could also use these skills to teach Christian Authors how to write well and publish their works.
At the time of my beginning, my birth mother provided a lot of marketing for me and the company. She really helped in getting my name to the right people, and that helped generate more revenue.
For the first time in a while, I felt hope for me, my daughter, and my future as a financially-independent woman.
I began to recondition myself to know that if no one would help me, then I must help myself. And if I could not depend on my former husband to do his part, then I must separate myself from this destructive relationship in order to be in a position of freedom and blessing.
Certainly not easy, but it was worth it.
You Can Change Your World
Maybe you are in a similar position that I was in.
Perhaps you find yourself struggling between what you want and what’s actually occurring in your life.
Maybe you feel like there’s no hope for you.
But there is. You simply need to listen to your heart, which should be in direct alignment with God’s will. Once you find that, then you must take the steps to cultivate that passion and dream.
Women in particular face many challenges that often prevent us from establishing ourselves financially. In my case, I became a single mother with no job prospects, and I needed to create something that would sustain me and my daughter because I could no longer depend on others for assistance.
That’s when I honed in on my expert skills in writing and editing, and turned them into something that no one could ever take from me.
That was my first step in the path towards financial independence: starting a business.
But I also had to learn about financial management, lessons which I share in my book, Wealth and the Believer.
My journey was hard, but it led me to you, Dear Writerpreneur. And your journey is specifically designed to lead you to others.
In case you’re wondering where I’m at in my journey towards financial independence, here’s my current state:
These results are significant to me, and your results will be significant to you.

There are five pillars that Christian Authors generally lack:
