Greetings, Dear Writerpreneur,
I pray that you are well.
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I will teach you a valuable lesson for your Christian authorship.
In today's article, I want to give you some advice as it relates to acquiring the best experts for your authorship. When thinking about your publishing career, you want to ensure that you have the proper expertise to support your venture.
This means looking for a professional editor, graphics designer, and even a writing coach. And while it may be costly to hire such quality expertise, it is essential that you add this to your budget so that you present your best work every time you publish.
Given the cost associated with hiring these experts, you may think it's impossible to negotiate fees with them. Perhaps this is out of fear of what they may say; but in truth, there's no reason to feel this way.
If you are genuinely serious about your writing ministry, and you want to work with the best in the industry, then you should never be afraid to negotiate fees. You will be surprised to learn that experts are more willing to work with you and your budget, as long as both parties are satisfied.
So, let's dive into this topic more, and see how you can apply today's teaching to your work.
Don't Let Fear Interfere
One day, I was talking to a potential client about my editing services; and whenever this portion of any consultation arises, there’s always some hesitancy on the writer’s end. And for the sake of this article, I will focus on the topic of editing because it is the most important service that you must outsource.
Many writers have avoided the need to pay for the type of editing that their manuscript truly requires; and often times, this has led to a poor execution of the book.
I have read self-published books that contained embarrassing errors, which spoke poorly of the writer’s craft. Mistakes likes these can be costly in the end, especially when customers review the work.
Over the years, I have come across a number of potential clients who wanted to use my services, but they were unable to take advantage of them because of my prices.
Even though I had persuaded them that their manuscript needed the type of service that I provided, they chose to pay for something else within their smaller price range.
Little did they realize that like so many other freelance editors, I was willing to negotiate if they had presented this as an option.
I had another client who actually took this method to heart. She wanted to have a series of books edited for a whole year; and separately, each project would have amounted to $700.
When she asked if it was possible to work out a discount, I happily obliged. Because I loved her project and wanted to keep her as a repeat client, I presented an offer that satisfied us both: $525 for each project.
This is how many entrepreneurs work today.
While we have our set fees in place, many of us are eager to have quality clients.
Now, if my current client was inconsistent and wasted my time in talking about projects that would never emerge, I wouldn't have been willing to negotiate.
But I know that she's serious about her writing ministry, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with her in perfecting her publishing career.
This is how other businesses work with their customers.
I remember a few months ago, I contacted Sprint, my wireless carrier, about a charge on my account that I had not agreed to have. When I called the customer representative the first time, she gladly removed the charge and wished me well.
The following month, the same charge came back, and I proceeded to contact Sprint again to remove it. This time, however, a different representative would not agree to what I wanted. The charge remained, and I eventually paid it; but I was determined to leave a negative feedback with Sprint about my experience.
A couple weeks later, I received an email from the company, stating that it was sorry that I did not receive what I wanted, and issued me a $15 credit to my account. To be honest, that simple gesture of $15 made me want to stay with Sprint, regardless of my previous experience.
I knew that Sprint could deliver on what I wanted because I understood that negotiating with this organization was not only possible, but I was sure to get what I wanted if I simply asked.
In like manner, a writer should present a negotiable offer to an editor if he or she is truly willing to work with that editor.
In my case, building lasting relationships is my top priority in my business. Building a strong clientele is paramount to my company’s success, and without it, LiyahAmore Publishing would not stand.
People are its most precious commodity. If you come across any business with this same philosophy, you will find that those running the company will always be willing to negotiate with you if they want you especially as a client.
Here are Ways That You Can Negotiate with a Great Expert
Set Your Budget. Find an Expert. Start Negotiating.
As I mentioned previously, you want to take your publishing business seriously, and that means creating a budget that will give you the service and products you need.
Once you start doing that, then you can look for experts in the industry who match your budget.
If you find that you love the value and quality services that an expert brings, yet her fees are above your budget, start thinking about how you can negotiate with that person.
It will be one of the most important things you do as a new Christian Author.
Now It's Your Turn to Share
