We have all been blessed with gifts, talents, and dreams. They vary from person to person. There may be hundreds of thousands of people with the same talent or gift you have, but those gifts are unique to your individual personality. They are based on the choices and experiences you have encountered in your life.
However, the challenges and adversities you face along the way may make it difficult to hold onto those dreams and hopes. Maybe it was someone telling you that you don’t have what it takes to make it, or you’re just not good enough. Perhaps someone has impressed upon you that there are already numerous people in the world with that gift or talent; there simply is no need for another person doing that. Somewhere along the way, you have believed them and counted yourself out before you’ve even given it a try.
Maybe your dream has been put off because your “bill-paying” job has taken most of your time and energy just to cover daily expenses. Or you have become stagnant along the way as you wait for the “perfect” time or opportunity to pursue your dream.
I believe God gives all of us dreams, for He has blessed each of us with our talents and gifts. They are from Him and not of our own doing (James 1:17). They are also to be used for the building up of His Kingdom and for His glory. For all things come from Him and are to be given back to Him, for glory and dominion belong to Him (1 Peter 4:10-11).
Regardless of the negative words you may have heard from someone along the way, or the adversities of life rising up against you, don’t give up. Believe in yourself! Trust in the Almighty God, who knows the plans He has for your life, plans to prosper you, to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Challenges, obstacles, and adversities will rise up, but it is all meant to strengthen you.
My pastor recently told us that if we can’t handle the hate that’s sure to come our way, maybe we aren’t ready for the dream to be realized. My husband often told me that I was afraid of the responsibility that comes along with success, and that is why I hid my gifts. I have come to realize that it was true, and I had to begin to take on that responsibility in order to pursue my dreams. Yes, it does mean that you will be held to a different standard, and you will be judged. But if it’s worth having, it’s worth stepping up to the mic. He often says, “Truthfully, only One can judge. Don’t give in to the superficial and subliminal. Be who you are.”
People will say things to pull you off track, sometimes intentionally and other times unintentionally. You have to know yourself and believe in yourself, because no one else will believe in you if you don’t. Dig down deep to find the strength you need to give your best to your dreams.
The saying, “Don’t talk about it, be about it,” is true. You cannot share your dreams with everyone. There are some people who have a specific assignment to destroy your dreams and happiness. Yet, you must protect that from those negative forces of evil. Work on your dream and continue to make that a life focus. As you work on it and begin to see it come to pass, others will see your gifts through the work your hands produce. You don’t have to continue to tell people, “I can do this thing, or I plan to pursue this goal.” Let your works speak for themselves.
If at some point you find yourself lost or confused in the direction you are heading, give it over to the Lord. Wait patiently on Him to give you guidance in the paths you are to take. He will never steer you wrong. Proverbs 16:3 reads, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” He only wants what’s best for you, but you must trust Him.
Walk in your gifts and pursue your dreams.
“Hold onto dreams, for it’s the wind that blows and carries our thoughts, hopes, and wishes through the air so someone that hear may really care." - Marvin Ramsey, Sr.
