“And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing” (Isaiah 10:27).
Do you ever feel bogged down? Do you ever feel burdened? In this life, there are so many things that can drag us down--busy schedules, long work hours, and all kinds of things that fill up our calendars. We don’t have perfect families, the perfect job, perfect bosses, or perfect co-workers. This life can be full of yokes and burdens.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have something to help us with those burdens? One of the reasons many people turn to religion or the church is to help them with their troubles and burdens. It’s true. We want God to fix our problems and take away the things that cause us to struggle. But that is not the point of this verse. It would be nice if God’s intentions were to take away all our problems. It would be easier if Jesus did come to this earth to take away the troubles of this world. But that is not what the Bible tells us.
In fact, one thing we know from scripture is that Jesus told us this life would be full of problems. In John 16:33, Jesus tells us that in this world, we will have trouble. That is not on the top of the list when we think about promises from Bible. However, the verse does go on to tell us to take heart because Christ overcame this world.
Jesus did promise that His yoke was easy and His burden was light (Matthew 11:30). So what was He promising if He was not going to take away our problems? Jesus came to take away sin (Hebrews 9:28). In John 1:29, John the Baptist announces Jesus as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”
Now, we receive clarity: The burden—the yoke the God promised to remove—is the punishment for sins. We know that all people have sinned (Romans 3:23) and we know that the punishment for sin is death (Romans 6:23). But we also know that Jesus became the sacrifice to take away the punishment for sins. The book of Hebrews illustrates how Jesus came to perfect the laws that the Israelites had followed for thousands of years. They had followed the sacrificial system, and that put off the punishment for their sins. Hebrews 9:13-14 explains that the anointing with the blood from bulls and goats had been replaced with the anointing of Christ’s blood that cleanses our conscience before God.
The daily grind of our life is not going to be removed until we are removed from this life. But we can take heart that there is a better promise—the promise to take away the yoke of sin. The book of Romans talks a lot about being a slave to sin, and 2 Peter 2:19 tells us that people are a slave to whatever controls them. This slavery is what Christ wants to remove. He does not want us to be controlled by sin and selfishness. He offers freedom. Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
And John 8:36 reminds us “…if the Son [Jesus] set you free, you are free indeed.” The anointing of Christ’s blood through His sacrifice on the cross has set us free. Through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life sets you free from the law that leads to sin and death (Romans 8:2). This is the anointing that destroys yokes--not the burdens of life, the busy schedules, the tough jobs, or the things that make our life difficult, but the burden of sin and the yoke of death. With the removal of this yoke, the every-day stuff seems more tolerable. Even if we have a rough day, we can take heart in knowing that Christ has overcome this world. We can take heart in knowing that this life is not the final promise. We can look forward to something much better than anything this life has to offer.
So, the next time you are weighed down in life, with its stresses and troubles, remember that Jesus promised to destroy the yoke of sin, and to bind us together with Him. When we are yoked together with Jesus, He is there to help us through the troubles of life. He is there to help us keep our eyes on the real promise of eternal life in a much better place--with no tears, no pain, and no death. Through His sacrifice on the cross, He shed His own blood to pay the penalty for our sins.
This is the anointing that destroys yokes!
