As women, we are naturally inclined to want to appear outwardly attractive to others. From hairstyles, clothing, shoes, accessories and oftentimes makeup, we alter our appearance to be perceived as “cute,” “gorgeous,” or “beautiful.” We become entangled in the snares of what my husband calls the “subliminal, socialistic, superficial society we live in.” We often believe we must look a certain way in order to attain beauty and be accepted.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to appear attractive and taking care of ourselves. From the curve of our hips to our womanly scent, even to our breasts (Proverbs 5:19), we were designed in such a manner to attract men. Yet, we do not achieve this by wearing minimal clothing or being loud.
Taking care of our bodies through proper diet and exercise will exude a healthy appearance, regardless of our shape or size. We are commissioned to honor God with our bodies, and present them as a living sacrifice (1 Corinthians 6:20; Romans 12:1).
When a woman is aware of her femininity, when she respects herself and those around her, she commands attention even as she walks in the room. Her beauty is in the confidence she exudes; her radiance attracts others; and the integrity she upholds at all times sets her apart. Her beauty is strengthened from her intellect, understanding, and wisdom, and when she knows her worth and what she has to offer the world.
Whenever I had a poor attitude as a child, my mother would say, “You can’t be beautiful on the outside if you’re ugly on the inside.” God does not look at our outward appearance and judge us as we do one another. Rather, 1 Peter 3:4 tells us, “Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
The gentle spirit will not allow us to speak out of turn, or allow anger to control or manipulate us into being something we are not. It leads us to demonstrate a caring, loving, and humble attitude. The quiet spirit has great value in God’s eyes, as a priceless gem--a gift that no man can purchase.
This quietness allows us to assuage the tempers that flare up in the home. We can then show by example what it means to be patient, loving, and kind. Women who implement this attitude within their homes and work environment will eventually lead those around them to operate in one accord, learning to live and work well together. We adopt this quiet and gentle spirit by walking in God’s will. The only way we can do that is spending time in His presence and His Word.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t know what we’re worth. Relationships, life circumstances, and our childhood often rob us of our self-esteem, taking and plunging it to the bottom of the ocean, leaving us with a fragmented view of ourselves. Those around us feel our despair, and if we’re not careful, it can wreak havoc on our relationships. We create a cycle of hopelessness, failing to love ourselves as the fearfully-made handiwork of God (Psalm 139:14).
He created us to breed and nurture our families, and to be the backbone and strength of man. From the beginning, we were created for an exceptional purpose. Genesis 2:18 speaks to this: It was “…not good for man to be alone, I will make a helper suitable for him.” Let’s look at the term “suitable.” It means: right or appropriate for a particular person, purpose or situation; fitting; correct. Therefore, we were not a mistake. He created us individually for His divine purpose. Situations will occur that cannot be carried out by anyone except you, and God has created a man specifically for you and you for him, which takes your beauty to a new level in Christ.
A woman’s beauty is shown in understanding herself, realizing that she does not have to compete with men. She humbly and willingly submits herself to her husband’s authority as is required in Ephesians 5:22-24. This is a sign of strength because she does not concern herself with what others think. Instead, she honors both God and her husband. He relies on her inner strength to keep him strong in this world. Her beautiful spirit allows her to listen to his hopes and dreams, and inspire him to soar. From our physique to our spirit, God carefully and beautifully crafted us in His image (Genesis 1:27). Internal beauty exudes externally when it is derived from the Spirit of God.
Woman, you are fearfully and wonderfully made, therefore, let your beauty shine forth!
