God told me that when I believed a lie over the truth, I was saying to Him that I did not care what He thought. I was not interested in the freedom Christ died to gain for me. When I held onto what I said myself or what others said to me over what God said, I was calling God a liar. But as Numbers 23:19 declares, “God is not a man that He should tell or act a lie, neither the son of man, that He should feel repentance or compunction [for what He has promised]. Has He said and shall He not do it? Or has He spoken and shall He not make it good?”
There are so many of us walking around, bound by the lies that have been passed down to us. We are bound by lies we tell ourselves based on transient things (situations and circumstances that can change). We are bound, and some of us do not realize it. We profess freedom in Christ, yet we are still acting and reacting out of the lie. We lash out when the truth is being told because we are unwilling to accept it. We walk around angry, offended, bitter, and unforgiving because we will not let the light of the truth shine on the lies in our lives. We are unable to resolve matters with our brothers and sisters in Christ because the lies keep us silent. Because of this, our offerings are unacceptable to God. Matthew 5:22-25 states, “But I say to you that everyone who continues to be angry with his brother or harbors malice (enmity of heart) against him shall be liable to and unable to escape the punishment imposed by the court; and whosoever speaks contemptuously and insultingly to his brother shall be liable to and unable to escape the punishment imposed by the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, You cursed fool! [You empty-headed idiot!] shall be liable TO AND UNABLE TO ESCAPE THE HELL (Ghenna) of fire. So if when you are offering your gift at the altar you there remember that your brother has any [grievance] against you, leave your gift at the altar and go. First make peace with your brother, and then come back and present your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way traveling with him, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and put you in prison.”
Let’s look at the passage in Psalm 15. “Lord, who shall dwell (temporarily) in Your tabernacle? Who shall dwell (permanently) on Your holy hill? He who walks and lives uprightly and blamelessly, who works rightness and justice and thinks and speaks the truth in his heart, he who does not slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor; in whose eyes a vile person is despised, but he who honors those that fear the Lord (who revere and worship Him); who swears to his own hurt and does not change; He who does not put out his money for interest [to one of his own people] and who will not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall not be moved.”
What a powerful psalm! I want to draw near to the throne of God. I had to ask myself, “Have I put off the things that may prevent me from dwelling in His tabernacle and His holy hill? Was I a person who spoke the truth in my heart? Did I even have the truth in my heart? Or was I deceiving myself?” I had a lot of soul searching that needed to be done and I would need God’s truth to help shed light on what I found.
Are we willing to take off the masks? Are we intent on being naked and unashamed? The psalmist says we have to be willing to put off slandering with our tongue and doing evil to our friends. We want God to draw near to and accept our praise and worship. Are we willing to be a people of integrity?
Let’s tell the truth to ourselves.
