Thank you for taking the time to read another Empowering Post. I am confident that this article will truly help you as you seek to create a thriving writing ministry.
Today’s topic will add to my repertoire of empowering material. I will help you develop a more-favorable marketing plan by teaching you what is necessary for all Christian Writerpreneurs in regards to understanding the psychology of consumers and what this means for your authorship.
I realize that as a new or aspiring author, you may have never considered this aspect of the independent publishing industry. In fact, the basic assumption for most Christian authors is that they write a book, publish it, and they hope it makes sales. You may believe the same premise.
But what about the notion of taking your authorship to the next level? What about the desire to make this opportunity something that lasts a lifetime? What about taking your passion for the written word, and creating a large following that will help extend your writing career? How will you accomplish that?
It would be nice if the answers to these questions were a simple, one-step formula. But in truth, the entire process is complex and dense. This is why so many first-time authors do nothing more than publish a book and then plateau. Because they do not take the time to truly understand the business aspect of running their self-publishing venture, and they fail to achieve many of the goals that they have for their works.
I can say this with all certainty because I have witnessed it over the last few years among my clientele and with others, and the story remains the same.
My study of business and what works and doesn’t work led me to today's topic. On the outskirts, this concept can be convoluted and overwhelming. And for this reason, I hope that this article brings clarity and understanding to you.
It's important, however, that you grasp today's message because it will vastly improve your experience as a Christian Author. In truth, being able to understand the psychology of consumers will position you to make better decisions as it relates to selling your products to your consumers/readers.
And I'll show you why.
Basic Human Psychology
Generally, you are familiar with psychology, so I won’t spend too much time on its definition and history. I'll simply share a basic definition for this article's sake.
A student of psychology will examine the conscious and unconscious experiences, attitudes, and behaviors of a person or group, and develop principles around them.
Some of the areas that psychologist will study include emotions, motivation, intelligence, interpersonal relationship, etc. Again, the focus is on what’s occurring internally with a person, and how that translates to physical behavior.
While the world understands and appreciates the two main components of a man—the soul and the body—the Believer understands that we are actually three components—we are spirit, we possess a soul, and we live in a body.
For Believers, we are to regulate and conduct our lives based on the leading of the Holy Spirit. We get that. But when it comes to business--and you have to capture this--people will always make their decisions about a service or product based on their intellect and emotions.
In other words, people will often purchase items because they have created an emotional attachment to them, which often compels them to buy those products, even when the decision is irrational and unintelligent.
Here’s an example for you.
Just recently—as of this post—Apple® announced the new iPhone 7. It’s a beautiful product with a sleek design. The retail price for this phone is about $750. Now, as I share this story, please know that I am not against this product. I’m an Apple® geek, actually, and have the iPhone 6 Plus. But over the last month, I witnessed something truly remarkable about the behavior of a consumer.
A while ago, I came across a Facebook post of one of my friends who needed some money to help her and her son move to another area. She had set up a GoFundMe account, and began taking donations for her campaign.
For the first several days, nothing came in, and you could see her frustration in the tone of her posts. She was upset that no one wanted to give to her to help her out.
A few weeks later, I saw this same person, who by this time had gathered the money she needed to move, create a Facebook post in which she described how excited she was to pre-order the iPhone 7 and the new iWatch (a financial commitment of over $1,000).
When I read that post, I immediately thought about how much she needed money to help her former situation; yet, weeks later, she obviously figured out a way to get the Apple® products she so desired. Do you see the irrational behavior here?
This is a clear example of how consumers behave, and we all have fallen victim to this.
But why do we do this? Why, when we have so many other financial responsibilities, do we decide to take our hard-earned money and give it to a company that has already exploded on the scene in terms of wealth?
Consumerism and Human Behavior
In truth, there are many factors that will lead to it, even if the reasons are not intellectual, in other words, not grounded in reason.
For years, marketers have been able to leverage this factor, and have convinced consumers—you and me—to purchase items that really have no relevance to us if we really think about it.
For the most part, our basic needs are always more than met; but we still crave more on a whole as a society. For businesses that are driven by profit, this is good news. But for individuals like us who are concerned about an entirely different matter--ministering to others--this type of business-like attitude often conflicts with our moral judgments.
As I mentioned earlier, as Believers, we understand that we are 3-in-1, just like the Godhead. When we create books or products or services, we want to minister to the whole person. We want to bless others with our content. We want to share our stories of triumph and victory as given to us by virtue of the Blood of Christ. We want to do this for others.
YET, we run into this obstacle where the very ones who we think would enjoy our books are actually not concerned with our products.
In other words, while we want to minister to them, as a consumer, their focus is not always on investing in what will bless their spirit man, but what will satisfy their soulish realm also.
So, we as authors are faced with how to create products that appeal to them; how to invest in our graphics designs so that they will like what they see and buy the product; how to fashion a website that will truly catch their attention. I know this because I do it with my business. Why? Because every consumer will be moved by emotion, even among Christian buyers.
I teach this to you so that you, as a Christian Author, will not become so frustrated with your own products simply because you don’t see the type of sales that you think should happen.
But in order to see more positive results as a writerpreneur, you have to understand the psychology of the consumer.
You have to not only appeal to their intellect but also their emotions, even among Believers. You have to convince them that what you have to offer meets their needs and satisfies their wants at the same time.
This can be challenging for Christian Authors, especially because we want to be solely concerned with the spirit man and getting our books into every other Christian's hands.
We want to focus on getting every Believer to buy our products because we think it is something that each one needs.
But no Believer is without a soul. No Believer will simply buy a product because you wrote it and you’re a Christian.
You have to also understand the psychology of the consumer, and this will help you determine how best to reach him, and this will vastly improve your marketing endeavors.
Consumers are Emotional Beings
Here's what you should take away from this post: Consumers buy based on emotions; and Christian consumers purchase based on a spiritual AND emotional connection.
You can determine whether or not readers want to buy your book by asking yourself the following questions:
You see, it's not enough that you have created a product that you like. That doesn't matter to the consumer. You have to appreciate that she will decide to purchase your book based on how she feels as well as the spiritual connection she makes with your work.
There's a lesson that I teach in one of my books that explains why Christians are more inclined to purchase products and resources from another Believer. And it all goes back to understanding the consumer's psychological (and spiritual) behavior.
Keeping this lesson in mind will surely help you as you prepare your marketing plan for each of your books.
