Greetings, Dear Writerpreneur,
I pray that you are well.
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I spend some time motivating you to perfect your business as a Christian Author.
Today's article will be rather extensive. I have some powerful information that ought to serve as the foundation for your writerpreneurship. This topic focuses heavily on business planning.
While my post will dive into several important principles, I want to highlight that my book, Business Planning for the Christian Author, is a resource that will add further impact to today's lesson. You can purchase a copy of the book now, and begin applying my article's lessons (and that of the book) immediately.
Without further delay, let's get into the meat of this article, and dive into the world of business planning as a Christian Author.
It will revolutionize the way you see your authorship and brand.
Count the Costs
Let me begin with a story.
There was a man who had a desire to build a farm. He imagined that it would be large and spacious, wide enough to house the many animals and food products that would signify his wealth. Without much planning, he set out to work.
Day in and day out, he toiled at the foundation of the farm. But there was one small problem: He had not considered the cost it would take to complete such a task. He failed to properly prepare his plans, and as a result, his work was incomplete.
For many months, people mocked him, jeering at his lack of accomplishments. Many folks tried to warn him that planning ahead of time would save him money and time; but he didn’t listen. As a result of his lackadaisical behavior towards the beginning process, his mission failed.
If you are familiar with the Scriptures, then you know that I’m referencing the foolish builder that Jesus spoke of in Luke 14:28-30. This passage of Scripture, although in reference to one’s obedience to Christ, signifies a wonderful lesson that we can learn as Christian Authors.
Quite often, and I have seen this over the years, writers refuse to sit down and “count the costs” that are associated with completing a work as important as book publishing.
Now, I have to assume that if you’re reading this post, you are probably doing so because you want to learn how to be successful in this venture of independent publishing.
But what I’ve discovered over time is that as much drive, passion, and zeal that Believers have towards writing the book that they believe God gave them, very few actually take the time to plan how to bring it to pass.
And that’s what I want to address in this article: the importance and value of creating a business plan for your books.
I realize that for many writers, this may seem like a contradiction or a hindrance to their creativity; but far too many writers fail to accomplish their “God-inspired” mission because they don’t make the necessary steps to create the business plan.
Think of it like this: Would you want to live in a house that someone built who did not properly build it according to a safety plan? Or would you want to travel across the country without so much as a map to guide your way? I hope not. But that’s exactly what you do as a writer when you fail to construct your author’s business plan.
When I began working as a freelance writer and author, I made the same mistake.
I went into this venture without any clear direction, and I know for a fact that it hindered my progress.
Back in 2015, when I finally decided to take LiyahAmore Publishing more seriously, and genuinely create a lasting career for myself, I knew that I would have to construct a plan that would guide my way. And to be honest, I hated that idea.
I didn’t want to deal with creating an Executive Summary or worry about Financial Projections. These terms “threatened” me, mostly because I failed to understand them. But I knew that I wanted to take my company to another level; and that meant learning about business, no matter how long it took me.
And I’m so glad I did.
Over the course of nine months, I studied everything I could about starting a business and running it. I took advantage of the many free resources that are provided, and disciplined myself to understand the terms that were necessary for projecting long-term success.
I did all this, even though I never felt like having a business plan as an author and writerpreneur was necessary.
I did it because I believed strongly in my vision and my goals.
But as we all know, faith without works is dead. No matter how much I believed in my mind that I could accomplish great feats, I had to exercise my faith and learn what needed to be learned.
The Rewards of Planning
By December of 2015, I finally began constructing my business plan, one that would meet my needs.
I realized that if I truly wanted to see this dream realized, then I would need to commit months, not just days, to careful planning. And it has paid off dramatically.
I realize that in today’s culture, we want everything to be completed quickly. We want the wealth NOW. We want the manifested blessing NOW. We want to learn how to become a best-seller in 30 days, or how to publish a book in 7 days.
We don’t understand that when it comes to time, God exists out of it. And if you want real success, you have to take your time with it and treat it as a treasure.
You have to dive deeply into the dark crevices of information to find the tools and resources that you need in order to prosper.
You have to wait on the Lord to connect you with the right people and the right influencers so that you are not easily led astray. And there are a lot of people who will promise you quick success, but they won’t deliver because they are selling you fast results.
What you want as a thriving Christian author--as much as you may deny it--is for someone to tell you that you need to commit 6-12 months to really perfecting your craft and your authorship.
You need someone to tell you that slow and steady wins the race. You need someone that will be brutally honest and tell you that five years of working in the self-publishing industry is what brought her to this place. Why? Because when it comes to true success, it will never happen as quickly as you think.
And it will never happen without planning and cost evaluation.
There’s a passage in the Bible that reads, “Wealth [not earned but] won in haste or unjustly or from the production of things for vain or detrimental use [such riches] will dwindle away, but he who gathers little by little will increase [his riches]” (Proverbs 13:11 AMP).
Another version of this passage reads as such: “Easy come, easy go, but steady diligence pays off” (MSG).
In other words, while it may seem like people are earning wealth quickly by creating books or other informational products, in truth, you are only seeing one side of the story: the good side.
Those who are doing well legitimately do so because of years of hard work and dedication. More than that, these same individuals have taken the time to plan accordingly, thereby establishing a road map of where they want to be with their work.
The same must be for you and your authorship. No matter if you are at day one of the process or day 200, you need a plan, a well-constructed, carefully-thought-out plan.
You need to sit down and fight through the frustrations of putting all your ideas on paper. You must master that because if you can’t tell where you’re headed with your work, neither will anyone else.
Build Your Plan the Right Way
If you have never considered the benefits of creating a business plan for your authorship, I want to encourage you to do so. It will bless you tremendously. If you are like many new or seasoned authors, you may not know how to go about completing a plan. But that’s no excuse for not working on developing your plans.
You will find that once your plan is in place, you will have clarity and focus for your venture. And others will want to work with you to help your vision expand.
After I developed my business plan for LiyahAmore Publishing, this is when people began to partner with me. Only after accomplishing this could I confidently share with visitors, followers, and my team members the direction that the company and its projects were headed.
For many people, this focus gave them a sense of trust. They believed not only in my vision, but also in the leadership that I could provide to them.
Creating my business plan—and really studying what it takes to thrive—helped push me in this direction. This, in no way, takes from the power to prosper that I received from the Holy Spirit to lead this work. But with wisdom—or godly insight—comes understanding—or the knowledge to implement that wisdom.
And planning is crucial to this endeavor.
In my Empowered Writerpreneurs Program, I go into specific details as to why and how you formulate a business plan as an author. Remember, each venture is different, and as such, an author’s plan will not reflect that of another business. Because my focus is exclusively on Christian Authors, each lesson and material resource will help you develop the understanding and the know-how of cultivating the gift that God gave you, thereby enabling you to complete the task that you’ve been assigned. And this will also be reflected in the business plan lessons and assignments.
But before I go into more details about my school, let's chat a moment about today's topic.
