Today's post is for the author who is slightly familiar with Facebook and the many number of authors' groups it has.
I wanted to take some time with this topic because I see so many Christian writers using these platforms ineffectively to promote their books.
And I don't want you making the same mistakes that thousands of them do.
For the record, I'm not totally against Facebook groups. In fact, I manage two groups of my own, and do promote a couple of products within them.
But what I do protest is the way in which these groups operate for Christian Authors.
While it would seem that you could find great support and encouragement from these large groups, in truth what you find are thousands of writers "marketing" their books to each other, hoping to make a quick sale.
A complete waste of valuable time and energy.
So, in this post, I want to share with you some interesting facts about Facebook groups, and show you why it's important to adjust your way of "promoting" in them.
Let's dive into the teaching.
What are the Facebook Authors' Groups?
Without going into too much detail, I will simply continue this article by giving you a general description of Facebook groups.
As with all types of online groups, Facebook enables anyone to create a group that has a central focus, theme, idea, or mission.
The idea is to gather as many people around a common cause who can gather support, assistance, and even financial contributions...if you know how to do that.
Facebook groups are phenomenal in bringing together individuals from across the world. You can establish a new virtual community within a group, and may even find ideal experts, influencers, and supporters for your mission.
While the whole purpose of social media is to build and strengthen connections, there are those like me who also use this platform to promote products and services. And there's nothing wrong with that as long as the people in the groups welcome it.
Facebook groups are widely popular with Christian Authors because it gives each person a chance to "share" his or her book with others.
For a new author, this may seem like a great way to promote one's book freely. But there are several drawbacks to using this platform in the way that so many thousands do.
Facebook Authors' Groups Just Don't Work for You
Don't get me wrong.
If you promote your book in one of these groups, and a random person decides to purchase it, then great! This option has worked in your favor. But this is not the norm, and you would think with all the wasted time and energy, Christian Authors would stop using this same, tired "marketing" method.
Unfortunately, what you will see occurring in these groups are THOUSANDS of authors promoting their books to other authors who are also trying to sell their books.
In other words, almost all posts involve authors doing the same thing in each Christian writer's group.
That's a BIG problem!
For months now, I have taught my students and network members that the best and most effective way to promote their books is to firstly identify their ideal reader. And then work towards sharing great content with readers who are most interested in their books. That means it's far better to stop promoting in Christian Authors' groups if their books have nothing to do with helping Christian Authors specifically.
That's the same message I will share with you.
No matter how great your books are, if you are promoting to people who really don't care (or don't matter) then you are wasting your time.
You are also opening the door to a great deal of frustration.
Now, I know what I'm talking about because I'm in about ten Christian groups on Facebook. But I'm there so that I can find more readers like you who want to learn how to perfect their Christian authorship and develop a strong writing career.
I'm in those groups because these groups contain my ideal reader and audience.
Instead of sharing images of my book cover exclusively, I share my blog posts in these groups. Why? Because I am providing value and insight to my ideal reader: the Christian Author.
But this is certainly not the same method and strategy that other authors in these groups employ. And they're doing themselves a great disservice.
Don't Follow the Traditional Pattern of Behavior
While it is evident that Christian Authors aren't using their time wisely in these groups, this does not mean that Facebook groups are altogether useless. In fact, they're quite powerful, but only when managed correctly. So, here's what I would advise you and others like you.
If your main goal is to promote your book in a Facebook group, consider starting your own. Make this platform a part of your brand and writing ministry; and invite others who share the same interests as you to join. This is the best way to promote your works without spamming your content in the groups that just don't care about your product. Build community around your brand, and consistently share valuable content with it for free.
Facebook groups are an excellent way to find and group your ideal audience. And it gives each member a chance to collaborate with others who share the same interest.
