Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I teach you valuable lessons that will transform you from an average writer to dynamic writerpreneur.
For today's article, I want to share with you a chapter from my latest resource, Building an Author Platform that Works! I'm excited about this project because it gives you the science behind constructing your online presence so that your ideal readers come to love your work.
I did not realize the kind of impact having an Author Platform would be until I started working on mine back in 2015. I made the terrible mistake of thinking that people would automatically cling to my writing ministry simply because I wrote a book. What I learned from that experience was that I needed to create a home base that would house my content library, which would be used to grow my influence.
And since then, my writing ministry has flourished.
In this article, I will share with you Chapter 1 of my Author Platform e-book. When you purchase the book, which you will find in the "E-book" section of LiyahAmore Publishing, you will also receive the complementary video training session that dives more into this topic.
Chapter 1 is all about connecting the principle of building a writing ministry with constructing your Author Platform. If you don't know what your business plan is; if you don't know how to perform market research; if you have no idea about the kind of content you should create for your audience, then building your Author Platform will be more difficult than you realize.
But I want to help you overcome that challenge.
So, jump into this Empowering Post to read Chapter 1, and get ready to be empowered!
Chapter 1 Introduction
In this chapter, I will teach you about the importance of laying the foundation for your writing ministry, even before you start building your Author Platform.
Your foundation will include knowing your ministry’s vision and mission. It will involve you knowing what your annual goals are and how building your Author Platform plays a part in it. It will call upon you to construct a business plan so that you are not creating content that does not yield results.
After you read through the chapter, you will engage in a video training session that will give you tips on how to lay this foundation. Ultimately, the solution to doing this the right way is by receiving my direct coaching and training, which you will receive as a student of the Empowered Writerpreneurs Program.
But if you find that you cannot enroll in the school right now, then this video training session will give you some advice for what needs to happen before you proceed in building your Author Platform.
So, let’s get into this teaching.
What is a writing ministry? And how does an Author Platform play a role in it?
When I first began working in the self-publishing industry, I had no idea what I was doing. Fortunately for me, my birth mother had already stepped into the publishing arena, and she provided me a plethora of knowledge that helped me produce my first book.
The more I engaged in this work, the more I realized that there were methods that new Christian Authors could use that would help each one succeed. But first, we needed to build a solid writing ministry so that the rest of our efforts would be effective.
In 2015, that’s when I began to explore this idea of building a writing ministry. In a way, this was a new concept, especially as I began to carve out a new niche called Christian Writerpreneurship. But at the same time, a writing ministry wasn’t that much different than the principles laid out for a traditional business.
In other words, having a writing ministry is not that different from owning and managing a business.
This, I believe, was something that new Christian Authors were not aware of, and it explains why so many of them failed to thrive in their work. That’s when I set out to discover the answers that would change the landscape for us as God’s anointed writers.
Creating a successful writing career means that we must first establish our business and ministry on a solid foundation.
Just as no business can expect to succeed without careful research, planning, and execution, no Christian Author can expect to thrive without developing a writing ministry.
You must have a business plan.
You must engage in market research.
You must learn about your ideal reader and audience.
You must learn to craft content (i.e. books) that your readers actually want from you.
In other words, if you don’t understand the fundamental principles of building a business, you will not comprehend the principles of building a writing ministry. And there’s simply no way around it.
In my years of working with Christian Authors, I’ve found that the majority of new ones simply want to write a book, publish it, share its cover on social media, and then watch the money roll in.
But that’s not how it works, because that’s not how consumers behave. When you know how to function as a business person—in essence, a good steward over your writing ministry—then you will never fail in your calling. You will always create books that sell, because you have the structure in place that will guarantee you have an audience full of eager buyers.
In just a moment, I will direct you to a video training session, which will help you understand the various elements of having a writing ministry. But for now, allow me to demonstrate how this revelation came to me.
As I shared before, when I published my first book, I had no idea how to keep my writing ministry alive. In fact, I had no writing ministry at the time, just a book to add to my resume. So, when the hype and momentum dwindled after the first few weeks, it became difficult for me to convince people to continue supporting me by purchasing my book.
After realizing that my book sales would not recover, I decided to move into freelance writing and editing full-time. What I found was that my clients, in spite of having great books, were not experiencing the success that they desired. And my advice to them, go figure, was that they needed to treat their authorship as a business.
Now, here I was giving out great wisdom about how to enhance their authorship; yet, I failed to apply the same principles to my own work. And that’s when I decided that it was time to get serious with this calling.
I began analyzing how other entrepreneurs became successful online, and how they created books that helped to showcase their expertise with others. And what I found were simple, effective business strategies that could be easily applied to Christian authorship. One of those principles included building a dynamic Author Platform.
Your Author Platform is that one space that is specifically designed with your readers in mind. It’s based on the mission and vision of your writing ministry, and it has the power to make your work shine.
You will find that unless you have the structure and foundation laid for your writing ministry, your Author Platform will be disconnected from your goals. And here’s what I mean.
When people visit my website, LiyahAmore Publishing, they know exactly what my writing ministry is all about: helping Christian Authors thrive. Everything that I create on that platform is about that ideal reader. I don’t share random information about my personal life. I don’t write about recipes or the latest fashion.
The work is about empowering you and others like you. And my Author Platform is a visual representation of my vision and mission. I certainly would not be able to have such a platform if I did not know what my writing ministry was about. I couldn’t properly display the right content if I did not have the roadmap to success. If I failed to create a proper business plan, then my Author Platform would be obsolete.
And the same is true for you, Christian Author.
So, before you can learn all about building an Author Platform that works, you must understand what is required in laying the foundation for your writing ministry. And I want to expound upon this in the following video presentation in just a moment.
Here’s what I want you to take away from this initial chapter on building your Author Platform. There is a formula to success for Christian Authors, and it is simple:
That’s it! I know that it might seem more difficult than that, but it’s not. However, there are some skills that you need to develop to help you master these elements; but that can be accomplished over time.
What you will find, Dear Writerpreneur, is that the more you learn about the business of Christian Writerpreneurship, the more you will discover that writing, publishing, and selling books can be exciting and financially rewarding.
You can make this your full-time work, but you must be willing to do the little things that will put the entire puzzle together.
And that’s what building your writing ministry will do for you.
Now, let’s step back for a moment and consider how constructing this business of yours connects to your Author Platform. Head over to the Chapter 1 Video Training Session, and begin working on understanding your writing ministry before jumping into Chapter 2.
