Greetings, Dear Writerpreneur,
I pray that you are well.
Welcome to another Empowering Post, which I know will bless you and impact your Christian authorship.
For today's article, I want to spend some time discussing an important element of Christian writerpreneurship: creating multiple streams of income.
Just the other day, I reflected on the number of projects I am juggling at one time, and quite often it can become overwhelming. But I realize that in order for me to see the type of results I’m after, then I must put in the necessary work. It's challenging, but rewarding.
As a Christian Author, I want to stress the importance of seeing yourself as a productive, successful writerpreneur, one who is able to generate wealth through multiple streams of income. While it is easy to believe that your one book will be the ticket that brings in all the wealth, putting all your “eggs in one basket” can actually harm you and your business.
Far too often, Christian writers cannot see the bigger picture, mostly because they don't treat their authorship as a business.
They place all their hopes on "making it big" with their one book that they don't realize that their book is a tool to use to open multiple doors of opportunities.
You know, over the years, I have seen both successful and non-successful authors. And the ones who have been able to create a lasting self-publishing career are those who know how to effectively market their great works and to create multiple streams of income.
And this is the message that I want to make clear to you, dear writerpreneur: To become successful in this venture, you need to develop ways that you can generate an income from different venues.
Don’t simply rely on your book, but think about how you can use your book to create other streams of income and opportunity.
But before you can do that, I want you to consider an important element as an author: the purpose for why you do what you do.
The Purpose for Your Authorship
What is your mission?
Who do you want to help and why?
How will you go about helping this person effectively?
How will you effectively convey this message to your ideal audience?
These are questions that you must ask yourself, even as you prepare to create your books and any other product you develop.
The purpose for which you do what you do is paramount to your growth and success. And it is especially important if you want to create multiple streams of income as an author.
But here's something else I want you to keep in mind: Creating multiple streams of income is not just about the money; it's about helping as many people as you can through multiple ventures. And here's why.
Let’s say, for example, that you want to create self-help books for women who are struggling with finances. While you may think that simply writing a book will suffice in helping this audience, you want to think about how your audience would best be affected by your work through other means. After all, the main idea for creating a dynamic authorship is to create a powerful, thoughtful, compelling experience for your readers.
If your only focus is to make some money with your book, then you’re missing the point of having a great writing career. Again, think about your purpose for writing the book.
If your focus, however, is to truly help others with your work, then it is paramount that you come up with ways that you can minister to them by other means, all the while bringing extra income to your ministry.
Let me use the same example as above. If you write a book for women who struggle with finances, you can also create an e-course that will give them a series of lessons that walk them through the steps of achieving financial success. In doing this, you not only empower your audience with a different type of experience, but you also create another way for you to earn money using your authorship.
This philosophy of creating multiple streams of income actually works for you and your readers because they know they can receive a holistic experience, one that extends beyond your book.
Don't Focus Exclusively on Your Books
In a previous post, I highlighted some really great points about why you should stop focusing on book sales exclusively, and instead use your books to help you create other types of products or services. The reasons for this are many, and I want to highlight one such example in this article.
It is very likely that after you have published your books and spent a few weeks marketing them even more, eventually that excitement will dwindle away and people will not feel compelled to get your work.
I’ve seen this happen, and it has devastated many newly published authors. They may have witnessed high energy and an engaged audience at the start of the launch, but weeks later, no book sales and no more interest.
Maybe you have experienced that, and if so, there’s no need to worry or panic. Simply come up with another tool or strategy to help build momentum again. Here's an example.
If you published a book, but find that no one wants to purchase it anymore, consider creating a webinar session in which you will focus on one of the main topics of your book.
Invite as many people as would be willing to join—and not simply everyone—and then create a fantastic package for all attendees.
You can spend about 90% of your time really engaging with your audience, and 10% of the time hard selling your book.
You can see that not only have you reignited attention for your work, but you have also provided another learning experience for your audience. You may have even connected with new readers, who may become one of your biggest fans.
You may also discover that hosting webinars is a gift that you have, and you can turn this venture into a regular stream of income with some creativity and expert training.
Learn from My Experience
Not many people know that I published a book back in 2012. I did it after I had gone through my ordeal with my former employer at a public school. And I wanted to write it as a personal memoir of my experience.
After so many weeks of promoting the book—going on virtual tours and interviews—I had sales, which was really great!
But after a few months, the book simply dwindled in the sea of many other works. I didn’t maintain the momentum that I could have done, mostly due to personal reasons that prevented my full attention.
While I have not found a way to make my published book a part of my multiple-streams-of-income strategy, I have found a way to do it for the other books that I continue to publish.
Rather than simply marketing and selling the books individually, which could generate some income on their own, I decided to include the books as a part of my Empowered Writerpreneurs Program.
My books serve as supplemental resources within the course, in the same manner that traditional classes have multiple textbooks. And they contain information that is clearly relevant to the material presented in the course’s lessons.
My adult learners love this type of complementary experience because the value far outweighs the price for enrollment. It's a win-win situation, both for my company and for my students.
And this is what you can also do with your works. Think about how your books can become a part of something else, whether as an author’s package or a bible study group or whatever. Be creative, and always keep your audience in mind.
Now It's Your Turn to Share
While creating multiple streams of income can be a challenge, it's something that you must develop if you intend to make a full-time living as a Christian Author.
