In Genesis 37:18-20, 27-28 and Genesis 39:19-20, Joseph’s brothers allowed themselves to be consumed with jealousy, therefore causing them to plot against his dream. This is the same thought process that prompts many of us to entertain the same notions. We begin to murder with our words by gossiping and speaking ill of others. We slander the character of others by disputing them when they say they have heard God speak to them about a matter. Some of us take it so far as to think it invalid if it does not measure up with our standards or thoughts.
As I imagined the things that could have been going through Joseph’s mind, I thought about what I would have been thinking if I had been thrown in the pit by those I trusted. Anger and confusion flooded my mind. A sense of disbelief circled around me.
Joseph had done nothing wrong; he confided in his brothers; he had no reason to believe they would look to harm him because of his dream. Can we identify with Joseph as his cries for help went unanswered? I believe he felt abandoned and alone as he heard his brothers walk away and leave him in the pit. David knew this pain as well: “My heart is sore pained within me; and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me. For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it; neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him; But it was thou, a man my equal, my guide, and my acquaintance” (Psalm 55:4, 5, 12).
What an opportunity for Satan to “kill two birds with one stone.” He has deceived one into betraying the other. Hurt has the ability to turn into anger, which can establish a root of bitterness within us. We should always remember that the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. If allowed to remain, thoughts of abandonment can cause us to doubt God’s presence in every situation. We can lose sight of His Sovereign rule over every circumstance; and like the psalmist in Psalm 22:1b, 2 states, “…Why are You so far from helping me, and from the words of my groanings? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but You answer not; and by night I am not silent or find no rest.”
The enemy wants us to feel forsaken. He wants us to feel alone, as if no one cares. He wants to keep us to ourselves so he can be the only voice speaking to us.
But we are not forsaken nor abandoned by God.
Joseph went from the pit, into slavery, then on to the prison. From the outside, it appeared that he went from bad to worst – all at the hands of someone else. Can you conceptualize what the devil was speaking to Joseph’s mind? What would have been your attitude in his situation? What position would you take if you were in his shoes?
Let us look at Genesis 38:21-23: “But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the site of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. The keeper of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.”
It is impossible for God to lie as stated in Titus 1:2: “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” With this knowledge, understand that God’s word for your life will come to pass. The dreams He has given to you will not be deferred.
