Bless the Lord, Christian Author!
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where I teach you valuable lessons that will truly impact the growth of your new writing ministry.
I'm Felecia Killings, the Founder of LiyahAmore Publishing, and I've been working with new Christian Authors since 2011.
My mission has always been to provide you the best resources and training that will help you manifest your vision as an author.
And I'm pleased to share many of my FREE lessons with you through my author platform and blog.
Over the last few weeks, the focus of my teaching has been on developing productivity strategies that will help you make the most of your time and energy.
I share the entire Productivity Lessons over on this page, so I invite you to read them during your spare time.
Now, for today's learning, I want to help you understand what it means to be truly focused on your mission and vision.
I'm going to share how this particular trait is crucial to your growth and increase.
More specifically, I want to dive into the following areas related to being focused:
So, let's spend some time together with this lesson. While it will be rather extensive, it is certainly worth your time.
Sometimes You Need to Be Ruthless and Cold-blooded
Let's begin this lesson by first addressing what it means to be focused.
The most common definition relates to finding clarity and maintaining concentration.
Being focused also denotes that you are paying close attention to something so as to avoid distractions.
Both definitions serve their purposes for this lesson, so let's elaborate on how they apply to us as Christian Authors.
Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich) discussed something interesting regarding men and women who have acquired great wealth and riches.
He explained, "Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally know as cold-blooded and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is will power..." (page 98).
What makes this statement true is that this is what we typically find among people who have learned the art of remaining focused.
At times, we consider them to be mean and strict.
We admire their results and praise their accomplishments.
But we never really explore what helped them to achieve their goals.
If we did, then we would find that these same successful individuals have such keen focus on their mission that nothing can distract or deter them.
One may call them dogmatic and stubborn, ambitious and insensitive.
And these traits are not always a negative thing.
What we witness are people who simply concentrate their efforts and energies on the matters that will help them reach whatever goals they have.
This is a powerful trait to have, and one that you ought to employ as a new Christian Author.
5 Methods to Help You Maintain Focus
Conducting business in the online space definitely has its rewards.
But it also has its challenges, and many of those obstacles serve as distractions for us.
Think about all the notifications that you receive in a given day.
From email to social media to everything else, it seems like there are so many reasons to lose focus on what needs to be accomplished.
But unless you condition and discipline yourself to be focused, then your productivity will decrease dramatically.
Here are 5 ways that you make this happen.
1.) Have a clear roadmap as to where you are going with your writing ministry.
It's impossible to know where you are headed unless you have the direction and insight that you need to get there.
I remember when I first began taking my writing ministry seriously in 2015, I had zero clue as to where to begin or what to do each day to move me forward.
I would wake up each day, wondering if I should write a new blog post or market my services or apply for a new writing gig.
My mind was all over the place, and that was because I had no clear roadmap.
I didn't set SMART goals.
I didn't conduct the kind of research that I needed in order to inform my decisions.
I simply did work by the seat of my pants.
Certainly not a great way to be productive.
But once I began to map out my vision and mission, then I discovered all that I needed to do each day to help me see them come to life. The same will work for you.
Think about what you want to accomplish in your ministry.
Do you want to create a speaking platform through it?
Do you want to host conferences and live workshops?
Do you want to have an online school?
What is it that you intend to have in your ministry?
Based on that, you can then create the roadmap that you need to succeed.
You can start developing the strategies that you need to get to your destination.
For example, if you want speaking engagements, then you know that in order to set this stage, you should conduct online workshops, webinars, or chats to help market your work.
Or if your want to create an online school, then you know that each day, you should be focused on developing lessons and curriculum for publication.
Again, once you have that map, then you give your mind a reason to be focused on various tasks that will help you manifest your dreams.
2.) Prioritize your endeavors and daily tasks.
Being a writerpreneur is a lot of work.
You certainly wear more hats than you probably should, and for good reason because you want your ministry to thrive.
But with all that goes into building your writing ministry, it's important that you make certain tasks a priority over others.
Back in 2016 when I first launched the Empowered Writerpreneurs Program, I spent several months writing the curriculum for the school.
I knew that I wanted to open the school that year, but in order to do so I had to publish enough lessons that students could use.
So, during that time, my main priority each day was to create a new set of lessons.
I couldn't spend that time working on a new book project or doing LIVE training sessions that I do now, again, because my priorities at the time were different.
You must learn to do the same thing.
As you're thinking about this point for your own ministry, I want you to consider what are your main priorities today.
Don't think about everything that you want to accomplish in your ministry, because that will just distract you.
Think about your short-term, immediate goals, and then make them your focus.
Do you have a set deadline for completing your next book?
If so, your priority needs to be on writing chapters each week.
Or if you want to enhance your marketing endeavors, then your priority needs to be on creating dynamic content marketing materials that will draw in new visitors and readers.
These are just some examples.
In doing this, you will see just how quickly your ministry will grow over time, because you have learned to concentrate on what matters right now.
3.) Create a routine for your day.
This strategy works for you, whether you work on your writing ministry full-time or part-time.
Establishing a routine means that you are conditioning your mind to perform good habits that help you reach your goals.
For example, I'm learning to condition my mind to write a new blog post every morning.
While this is a lot of content to publish each week, I understand the benefits of creating effective blog articles that will help my ministry to grow.
Completing this task every day, and even better if at the same time each day, causes my mind to make this endeavor an automatic response.
And because I know that blogging helps to establish my authority, build relationships with you and my other readers, and helps to empower your ministry, I understand that this is a beneficial task.
When thinking about your writing ministry, consider the types of tasks that you can accomplish each day.
How can you fit them into your daily schedule so that they become automatic and routine?
Making this a part of your ministry will not only cause massive growth to your work, but it will also help you to remain focused and productive.
4.) Become ruthless and avoid distractions.
This strategy might seem redundant, but let me explain.
At times, when you are concentrating on a particular task, anything that stops you from completing it can make you irritable.
This happens to us all the time.
As you work on certain task that require your undivided attention, it may be necessary to be "ruthless" with others so that you meet your goal.
Some distractions can be social media notifications.
Others can be friends or family members who are calling you while you are trying to do your work.
At times, when this happens, being focused will require that you ignore those distractions for the moment.
And while this may hurt other people's feelings, you can't really afford to think about that if you want to finish your task.
This, of course, does not give you permission to be an Uncle Scrooge. But you get what I'm saying.
There will be times when you must be dogmatic about things, and you can't afford to let other people's behavior deter you from your mission.
5.) Finally, take breaks in between completed tasks.
I love naps.
I know...I'm an adult...but I love them!
And because I wake up so early each morning, taking a nap during the day is what gives me an extra boost of energy to accomplish more throughout the day.
I want to encourage you to do the same thing.
Take some time to rest your mind, especially when it has released a lot of energy.
Resting is not the same as being lazy. So, I don't want you to feel guilty for stepping away from your work.
Give your body what it needs to recharge. And it will continue to serve you well.
A Persistent Spirit Will Keep You Focused
I recently wrote a great article on what it means to have a persistent spirit.
It's that strong will power to see what you envision come to life.
Without persistence, it's impossible to truly thrive in your writing ministry.
And without it, it's nearly impossible to stay focused on your tasks.
When you are sure and confident about the ministry that God gave you, it's now your responsibility to do the physical work to manifest it.
And that's where maintaining focus and a clear direction will assist you.
Now, that's all that I have to share with you for today's lesson.
I pray that it blessed you.
