why understanding the differences in editorial services will save christian writerpreneurs time and money
Greetings, Dear Writerpreneur,
I pray that you are well.
Welcome to another Empowering Post, where you and other Christian Authors can receive motivational content that will impact your authorship.
Today's article will focus on helping you understand the editing process for your publishing career.
By now, if you have already determined to write and publish a book, then you know how important it is to find the right editor for your manuscript.
In fact, and I want to drill this point in your mind, the editor is the most important professional that you must add to your publishing team.
As a professional Christian Author, you want your books to not only motivate, educate, or entertain, but you also want the message to come across clearly and concisely.
And your editor will ensure that this is so.
The problem, however, with acquiring such great talent is the cost associated with her fees. Editing will be the most expensive part of your publishing process, so you want to keep this in mind.
"Well, what about the freelance editors who don't charge a lot on sites like Upwork?"
If this question lurks in the back of your mind, then I will answer you with the same response that I tell my editing clients:
You get what you pay for...guaranteed.
Professional editors like me won't provide you a cheap service, and therefore our prices will reflect what we believe to be the best and most competitive rate for completing your projects.
In spite of having these fees, this isn't to say that you must go broke from hiring a great editor. And in this article, I will share with you why your understanding of the editorial process will actually save you time and money in the long-run.
So, let's get started.
"We Have Overcome Satin by the Word"
How's that for a subheading?
No, you didn't read an error or typo on my end. I'll explain my heading shortly.
I want to jump into this discussion by sharing with you a little experience I had a few years back.
Five years ago when I first thought about editing Christian manuscripts, my birth mother, who is a best-selling indie author, handed me a book that was written by another indie writer.
Because my birth mother had developed a reputation as a successful author, this other writer…let’s call him George…wanted her to look at his book.
He had just published it, and was quite proud of his accomplishments.
As my mother read through it, she noticed several errors, but none more obvious than the mistakes on the back book cover.
One day while visiting her home—my birth parents are divorced—she handed me the book, and asked me what I thought.
Initially, I thought it was a nice book. The cover appealed to me. It had a nice title and certainly looked like something that I would read.
I asked her what it was about, and she said, "Look at the back." As I read the summary, I realized that this was a Christian book about Believers overcoming the devil and such and such.
Great. Sounds impactful.
At this point, I looked at her oddly because I could tell that she wanted to show me something, but wanted me to catch it for myself. So, I continued to read, and as I approached the end of the summary, I read this statement:
“We have overcome Satin by the Word.”
Who is Satin? I looked at her, puzzled. “Did he mean ‘Satan’?”
Of course he did. But you couldn’t tell because the typo of this magnitude clearly projected an entirely different meaning.
I asked her who edited his work, because after all, I was looking to connect with Christian Authors at that time to help them re-work their texts.
That was her response. No one had edited his book because, and I quote, “He didn’t want anyone to mess with his words.”
Such a shame.
He genuinely thought his work was much better off by having no one look it over to provide relevant, useful feedback that would make his work a success.
Sadly, there are many Christian Authors who feel the same way as “George.” I hope you aren't like that.
Even as a professional editor and writing coach, I know how important it is to correct the errors that are in my works. If I don’t catch it, then my team members will. And I always tell them, "I need you to be my second eyes because I won’t catch everything, and perfection matters to me in this business." I let them know that their comments and feedback won’t hurt my feelings because I’m looking to demonstrate my excellence to others.
This is the value and importance of editing in the book publishing industry.
With every successful publishing project, there comes a high price tag on editing. I know it because I charge it. I’ve had clients spend close to $1,700 on editing one manuscript and other clients who have spent as low as $550 on a manuscript. And in each case, the client’s needs were different.
In today’s post, not only do I want to teach you the value and importance of editing, but I also want to break down for you the types of editing that your works may need. This is CRUCIAL to your understanding because it can save you money and time later.
And I want to emphasize this point again: Having an editor look at your products before distribution is costly, but there’s a reason for it because it’s the most important aspect of your self-publishing career.
If you fail to hire the right editor, then your books will fail, and I have seen this happen. So, take the time to save up for your publishing budget, and make sure that you hire the right person for the job.
But without any delay, let me elaborate on the different levels of editing for you. And mind you, there are other types of editing to consider, but my post focuses on what I believe self-publishing authors need, and the type of services that I offer.
The Different Levels of Editing
Make the Investment
Professional editing cannot be ignored.
You must make the investment.
Now, if you’re feeling slightly apprehensive about the editing process for your books, I want to assure you that you can learn how to self-edit much of your books. But even once you’ve done that, you will still need a professional to look it over before you hit the publish button.
How can you self-edit? This is what I also teach in the Empowered Writerpreneurs Program. I will show you step-by-step instructions on how you can perform edits and revisions on your manuscripts before you submit to the professional.
Not only will this save you time and money later, but it will also teach you how to perfect your writing so that you can produce even more books in the future.
As an undergraduate of the University of California, Davis, one of my English professors instilled this in me. He once told my class that you can get to the point to where you know how to edit your own works, without the aid of an editor. He, of course, was talking to English majors, in essence a group of hungry students who wanted to learn how to perfect their writing.
Yet, his words stuck with me, and I was able to implement that philosophy—and build a business with it—in order to create my own products. I want to teach you the same thing, even if you are not as skilled in writing as you desire.
Before I discuss more about my school and how you can get into the program, let's chat about today's article.
