“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to never dream again? Can you imagine the despair that one must feel when a dream, a hope, a desire no longer lives?
When I think about what it was like to have to discover a new dream for my own life (and the life of my daughter), I remember how terrified I was of the unknown. Will this business work? Will I be able to make it as a single mother? Where will we live? How will I pay rent? So many thoughts flooded my mind; yet, in spite of every reason why becoming a Writerpreneur wouldn’t work, I was more convinced that the dream could be realized if I would continue to believe.
Very often, especially for adults who have found themselves locked into a vision box, it can be difficult to see a new goal or dream. One may think that because she is no longer young, it would be a waste of time to traverse new territory or to discover new opportunities. But it’s never too late to explore new possibilities.
As I write this post, I think about Abraham and Sarah. Here were two individuals, well into their old age, yet still hopeful for a promise from God for a child. Amazing! Even at 90 years of age, Sarah still wanted to carry and birth a son. Even after 25 years of waiting for this promise, both were hopeful that God would perform His word.
What I appreciate mostly about this quotation from C.S. Lewis is that it resonates with so many hopeful individuals like myself. Although I am far from being considered “old,” I’ve found that re-creating a new dream and implementing it from the ground up could have been something that I accomplished in my teenage years. Where would my company be had I started it at 15-years-old? The truth: nowhere! This company and this dream is the sum total of the years of experience that transpired before this vision commenced. It was built on the foundation that I laid early in my years, one that involved discipline, tenacity, resilience, and fortitude. My previous hardships taught me to build my new dream on a Rock and not on sand; to build a company that can withstand the test of times. I am grateful that my hardest days happened earlier in my life rather than later because it has refined my moral character…much like how silver is refined by fire.
So, if you are wondering if it’s too late to become a writerpreneur; if your contemplating whether or not this dream is actually for you, remember not to base your decision on how old you are. Your years of experience make you more qualified for this role than you can ever imagine.
And as always, let’s grow together!
